Is Nov, 15th a reliable date?

Should I buy the game right now and wait for just 3 weeks, or should I buy the game right now but consider a longer time of suffering?

Question: Is it better to play at the promised date (if you even can) with a game full of bugs or is it better to wait longer for a bug-free experience?

To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,

Personally, I am planning on the game coming out when it comes out. If it comes out before then, I'll be quite happy (and more than a little bit perplexed). 'Release' dates are tentative dates in most gaming companies. Reliance to any heavy degree on these (for most companies, not just this one), can lead to heartache and nastiness. Best to simply take a more relaxed attitude to the whole thing and expect it when you see it.

All in my own personal opinion.

Judging from the fact that last time, it was around 12-24h for the download to complete on launch due to popular demand, I'd guess that 15th of Nov is not a terribly reliable date.
I wouldn't bother to take time off work for example.

Yeah. if determined to book the day off work, my advice would be to go with the 16th minimum. I fully expect to not be able to play it until the 17th :P

I'll rephrase: should I expect to wait more or less another 3 weeks to have a bug-free experience with BG 2, or should I plan to wait for a bit longer?

(I'm not taking a day off... I'm just asking if everything's going as expected, more or less.)

I think that if there were any delays (and the Devs were willing to talk them), they would probably make an actual announcement, rather then just drop the news in some random thread.

That's encouraging to hear from a Beamdog team member. Still, my standard policy is not to consider anything reliable until it's actually been delivered, so I'll stick with that here, but will consent that my cautious optimism level has been bumped up a few notches.

True, they sure did announce the delay for BG:EE; just a couple days away from the actual release.

Only the devs can really answer how the release is looking compared to the schedule. If you know you're going to buy the game anyway though, you may as well pre-order it. You can always just not play/install it and wait a bit more if you think it's too buggy.

With the stunt they pulled last time I'm not terribly inclined to trust them when it comes to release dates personally.

just a shout out question to the team:

are you working to get the game done by nov 15th regardless or would you delay if it wasnt ready?

either answer doesnt change my opinion as ive already pre-ordered and paid for the game but im curious.

i will say i agree too. i have made my mass effect opinion clear enough, but as i played i couldn't help but notice complaining about everything even before the ending. thane dying, kai leng, everything was a problem. sure i could sit down after the ending and think about the rest of the stuff, but i didn't allow it to destroy the experience until that final straw.

i enjoyed bgee when it was released. i actually get some laughs out of bugs and remind myself they will be patched. i remember at first my characters would walk through walls for some reason, so when i sent them north of fai, one character went through the wall and got himself killed by hobgoblins. i didn't let it sour my experience though.

I'm beginning to believe that BG2:EE is actually done and ready for release, and waiting for the actual release date to be unleashed. The renderer works, and doesn't appear to be the source of the BG:EE patch hold-up (appears to be bugfix related, not renderer related).

And, no, I have no actual insider information. Just wild speculation.

    I don't always preorder a game,

but when I do, you can bet your ass it's a good one.

    Hey, good to hear.

Sure, last time they announced the delay two days before the release date. But they were also completely silent the weeks leading up to it. Such is not the case this time. I think they'll deliver it on-schedule this time around.

I kind of missed that whole debacle since I wasn't on the forums yet, but why did they announce two days before? Surely they knew by that point that the game wasn't going to be able to be released even if they worked really, really hard. Was it to do with contractual negotiations that meant they couldn't announce the delay earlier? (I think I read somewhere that they had to negotiation with the other involved parties for the delay).

I'd hope so. I just got up at 4:30am for a meeting. ;)

Hey I get up at ungodly hours continuously for meetings and calls, yet I have never released a game on time. Come to think of it, I have never released a game ever actually. There must be some deep meaning to all this.

See above, a team member posted and said the date was good in this thread. My assumption is similar to others, the game is now done and ready to release, it is now a matter of fine tuning between now and the 15th (ie the big patch that impacts both games).

You are correct. They wanted to tell us earlier, but they had to negotiate with the other involved parties to let them delay it. Thus why they were silent for a good two weeks leading up to it.

Unless there's a chance you think you might not ultimately purchase (though I honestly don't know why that might be), I say to preorder.
  • SilverstarSilverstar Member Posts: 2,207
It didn't excuse giving us a completely bogus explanation though. They said the delay was to fine-tune the game and "apply polish" because we deserved the game to be all nice and perfect-like... BG:EE was somewhat flawed and hardly perfect/polished at release so woah! It must've been at like beta before the delay.

Thankfully that doesn't seem to be the case this time around. And with any luck, looks aren't deceptive.
