1) Make sure you have no mods installed. If you have anything unusual in your Documents\Baldur's Gate directory or the game installation folder, that could be causing the crash.
2) If you took any measures to get the game to run more smoothly prior to the patch (compatibility mode, ini settings), revert those changes to the defaults.
Then make sure your graphics driver is up to date; if it is, shoot me an email through support@beamdog.com and I'll take a closer look.

I have tried clearing the contents of ~/My Documents/Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition/ to verify that there were no settings in the .ini file or saved games that were causing the issue. When I try to run the game, it does not create a new Baldur.ini file as expected. The game worked nearly perfectly. I had one issue with Sarevok not being present at the final battle (which was kind of game-breaking) but was able to resolve this issue by editing Baldur.ini to set Sarevok's GlobalBehavior attribute. It was only after updating to 1.2 that I was suddenly unable to get the game to run.
Dee from Beamdog was kind enough to reply to my service ticket today. I facepalmed once I realized the fix worked. I really should have thought of it before. I did what Dee said and added BGEE.exe to the exceptions list and voila! kids. We're in business.
Edit: I tried to use "Application Opt-out" and set an exception for BGEE.exe, but this did not work for me.
