potions and scrolls

I'm finding that I hoard potions and scrolls, saving them for a rainy day. But, then I never use them thinking that any particular situation isn't bad enough to warrant using consumables. As a result, I end up with full cases of potions and scrolls and overflow taking up my inventory. I'm trying to think of a reasonable solution to this. The best I could come up with is to limit myself to X potions and X scrolls (say a single case of each). Any excess has to be used or sold at the next available opportunity. Does anyone else have a better system?

And, if I go with this system, which potions/scrolls would you recommend I keep as a core supply? I figure with one case, I can do 20 of each. What makes the cut in your book?

I would go with a different approach. If you find yourself with an excess of consumables, then chances are the game is too easy for you. Get some mods (like SCS) and up the difficulty - you'll be amazed how you'll suddenly find yourself scrambling for those potions and scrolls! ;)

for me? protection from Poison. its one of the few scrolls that isnt available as a spell as far as i can tell. and poison is one of those things that can really annoy you.

I agree with @Lord_Tansheron; increase difficulty and see how far that gets you without potions and scrolls. Or play a run without a cleric and a sorcerer and bard as only arcane casters. You'll depend much more on consumables if you have no protection spells and can't adjust the spellbook.

I may be forgetting some, but these are the ones I generally save:

Oil of Speed, Potion of ___ Strength, Potion of Mastery Thievery, Potion of Perception, Potion of Mirrored Eyes, Potion of Invulnerability, Potion of Invisibility, Potion of Freedom, Potion of Clarity, and Antidotes.

Save all green spells, dispel magic scrolls, haste scrolls, blindness, web, friends, identify, invisibility, horror, vocalize, resist fear, and pro. from petrification (unless you use metaknowledge).

If you use more of these, you will have to use far fewer potions of healing.

@Lord_Tansheron makes a good point. If you increase the difficulty, you may find that you no longer have a hoarding problem. You will long for the days that you had that problem!

Another thing you can try is a no reload/no res run. You will use potions, wands, scrolls, and NPCs that you never tried before and be extremely grateful for them.

I'm using EasyTutu. Would using SCS work with that? I don't want to gimp my party, but if I could make enemies a little smarter, that would be cool.

I don't think just ramping up the diffculty will help much. That mostly just gives enemies extra hit points. There have been plenty of "tough" battles I made it through without taking a scratch by using the right strategy. Giving enemies more HP will have the same end result, but just take longer.

I'd keep potions of Power, Heroism, Agility (for any melee with Dex>18), Fortitute (For anyone with low Con), Magic shielding (automatically save!), Invulnerability (+5 saves), Clarity (immune to charm/confusion) and Cloud/Storm Giant strength.

A mix of the above is what I usually trot out for Aec'Letec and Sarevok battles.
