Variables Carry over during Import?

I know the Vanilla BG didn't have any imported variables, just a few pieces of gear. However what I'm curious about is whether or not this was changed in BG2EE and actual variables are carried over from BGEE to BG2EE so that the choices you made, the romances you started, the people you picked up, are recognized in BG2EE, specifically with the new NPC's.
