Importing a Character

Hey everyone, having a bit of difficulty importing my character. A (hopefully) simple glitch. I can't find the char folder for BG2EE! There are the pre-existing character files for BG2EE on the character creation screen, so I figure it must be somewhere. In my BG2EE folder there is only the baldur.ini file. Any help would be much appreciated!

I did notice that the install put some files under Program File (x86), if that helps anyone. I still can't find the save or char files though.

Fixed! So, what you do is...

    1. Create a new game. I used one of their premade characters.
    2. Export the character once the initial dialogue with Imoen is over.
    3. Save the game under whatever file name.

This will create save and char folders in the BG2 folder; the same one with the .ini file.
    Then...

    4. Open Documents\Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition\characters
    5. copy the desired character files, both BIO and CHR
    6. paste them into the character folder for BG2

I'm sure I'm coming off as noobish here but what exactly did you mean for step 2? How do I export the character whilst in the game?

@Fisty Go to the Record screen (press R). There is an Export button :)

Hey, so I'm having a problem of my own... My imported characters... don't have their voices. They only say three things. The 'Aerie, I'm not interested in somethingsomething right now' line, whatever it is, and then in Lilarcor's voice "C'mon c'mon, I wanna whack something evil!"

What gives? Anyone know how to solve that one?

I'm having the same issue. I tried mightyboognish's fix but all I can see are my BG2EE saves. Any other suggestions?

I still cannot import my character from BGEE1. I have tried the above mentioned fix, and that did not work.

Are you checking the main game folder or the folder normally created in My Documents? The saves and character folders should be in your documents, not the main game.

I checked the documents, and found them. Thanks!

Oh, so I should clarify, and I'll add this to the post above. After making the folders appear in the BG2 folder, you have to manually copy/paste the BG1 character files into the BG2 character folder.

I managed to import final save by copying the file manually to the BG2 folder, and I had to merely change my portrait and sound file, as of course they are not to be found in BG2:EE. This is extremely frustrating, as I feel like these should be included in the game. It's essentially like I'm playing with a different character, and shouldn't have bothered to import a save or character at all. Plus I don't really like messing around with the files myself, but I'm hoping this will be fixed in a future patch. Probably will hold off playing until then, but the game itself looks good from the few minutes I played. Not trying to sound too negative, however. After all, BG:EE is practically perfect now, and I really enjoyed playing it - just want to put in my two cents, as I look forward to losing sleep over this game. :)

I also don't want to have to select a new portrait for my old character. Going to wait to see if they move the BG:EE portraits over to BG2:EE. Seems silly not to.

For those struggling with importing your character, here are some steps to get you started.

NOTE: This assumes you are using Windows 7...for those on different operating system versions, you want to find the BG2 directory with "baldur.ini" in it...

Generally you will be able to get to this through your "Documents" link (again in windows 7 open windows explorer and click the "Documents" text on the left sidebar).

You will need a saved game from BG:EE, this, too, should be in your Documents area under a directory called "Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition".

This assumes you have not yet played BG2:EE yet. If you have already started a new game and had either an autosave, quick save or saved your game manually, you can skip steps 1 - 6, start on step 7.

    Steps:
    ---------------
    1) Open BG2:EE
    2) Click "Shadows of Amn" book
    3) Click "Continue", "Single Player", and "New Game"
    4) Select one of the Pre-Generated Characters and click "Play"

NOTE: You are only getting to a point where the game will create the saves directory for you. This isn't the game you're going to keep!

    5) Go through the opening cutscene and click the "Quick Save" button.
    6) Exit the game.
    7) Navigate to your "Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition/save" directory.
    8) Right click/copy the save directory for the saved game you want to carry over to BG2.
    9) Navigate to your "Baldur's Gate II - Enhanced Edition/save" directory.
    10) Paste your save into your BG2 Saved game directory.

NOTE: You should now have a copy of a saved game from BG1 in your BG2 Saved Game Directory

    11) Restart BG2
    12) Select "Shadows of Amn" book.
    13) Click "Continue", "Single Player" and "New Game"
    14) On the Character Creation click the "Create" button at the bottom (not the play buttons next to any of the pre-generated characters).
    15) On the bottom button bar on the right is an "Import" button. Click that.
    16) Click "Saved Game"
    17) Select the saved game you copied in and click "Next"
    18) Click the Character Name in the upper left box and click the "Done" button.
    19) This will take you into the appearance portion of character creation to select appearance, sound set, etc.
    20) Select Name and your Name will Appear, you can change it if you want or keep it.
    21) Select "Accept" And you will start the opening cutscene with your imported character. Items and such that are supposed to carry over to the new game have properly carried over.

Edit: I do see the problem with imported character dialogs now. I'll bug it if it's not already done.

REPORTED: Bug 4126 For any Developers Coming Across This.
