Reputation in BG2 still work the same way?

I hated how having low reputation made things cost an insane amount of money, this still the case?

Yes, and it makes perfect sense, both from roleplay perspective and also game balancing perspective.

If you are infamous villains who burn, sack and slaughter your way across the land, do you expect merchants to be happy to see you wandering into their family business? On the other hand if you are a famous hero who saved his village, he might be inclined to give you some freebies, or a discount, so he can tell the barmaid 'guess who bought some arrows from my shop today!?'

From balance perspective. Playing evil gives you the freedom to kill and loot for xp, items and gold. Whereas me playing as a lawful do-gooder party never randomly barge into civilian homes and loot them for every gold piece and valuable belonging they own. So whatever I am missing out on from extra loot is mitigated by a relative discount I get in shops.

Remember that there are questionable establishments where those of questionable character get a discount, and good honest men like me never visit.
