Resolution does not scale

I'm at 1920x1080 but when I start the game I can only see 1/4 of the title screen. I changed my resolution to a lower setting and was able to get it to appear again, although at a very blurry and low res look. One of the features advertised for the game was widescreen support. What does that actually mean?

Is there no support for higher resolutions in this game? One would think this would be a top feature to have. A modern feature to have. I don't want to play in windowed mode as that does not solve the problem of not being able to scale resolutions up. I don't want to disable UI scaling as that also does nothing about getting the game to work at higher resolutions.

Yup so I tried windowed mode and now the game is pretty much unplayable because I can't scroll the screen up or down or right or left. If I lower the resolution on my comp I eventually get something half workable as 10% of the right side of the screen is still hidden away.

    I'm playing the mac version.
Using the native res with my retina display.
    Tried all other res.
Tried windowed and scale UI option.

    Game is unplayable.

The limitations are hard coded in the decade old game engine. What was high resolution ten years ago is not today and the developers had no idea the game would still be played a decade later. It does look a bit blurry on a monitor with a 1080p native resolution but far from unplayable...opinions vary.

This is not a new game. It is an old game with a new coat of paint and freshly shined chrome. If you understand that and accept it for what it is, It's an enjoyable experience. If you want the latest hardware optimized and newest eyecandy, this isn't the game for you.

I'm sorry this isn't what you expected.

What you're replying to and what dingoegret's problem seems to be are two totally separate things.

When you say mac version, do you mean on like an iPad or an apple computer?

@Joviwan Thank you, someone gets it. Yes I have a high end Macbook Pro. Nvidia GT 650M. 16 Ram. i7 processor. The new retina hd display. I can run the most high end game out now, Metro Last Light, on full settings and it works like a charm frame rate up and everything. My machine is decent.

@bdkinney I don't think you understand what the problem is. The game view goes off screen. This occurs at all resolution settings my machine is capable of. Native or otherwise. So the primary problem here is that I am unable to play because

    1) Part of the game is hidden from me, regardless of resolution setting.
    2) Windowed mode fixes this by shrinking everything into a small window but now I am unable to scroll the screen in any direction. If I maximize the window I can scroll left and right, but not up and down. This is a core mechanic, the game is unplayable without it. NO USING THE ARROW KEYS IS NOT A COMPROMISE as that is a real pain. I payed 100% for this game so I'd like 100% of the controls to be working.

Furthermore, yes BG2 can be played in higher resolutions than native support. Observe article 1 watch?v=Xl9A4bSTsTo. So I don't want to hear about how this is impossible. I've been playing Baldur's Gate since I was 12 and I've never encountered problems with resolution.

I'm not familiar with mac OS, unfortunately, so I'm not sure if I have any relevant advice. I know that on Win 8.1, windows has this weird DPI scaling under compatibility settings for the executable itself, which throws off how the game looks.

Being ignorant of how the game operates on a mac, I know on pcs you can edit baldur.ini to manually change the resolution. Is something similar possible for you?

It is and it appears to work sometimes as in sometimes when I do it it works other times, nothing. Don't know why this couldn't be in a graphics menu. Everytime I restart the game the ini gets reset so i have to go back in and change it. A real pain. And again, it works 50% of the time. I'm just baffled. Luckily DPI is only available in the retina model and yeah, i've messed with that too.

[EDIT] Yup, so the only way to make the ini fix work is to have the game set to window mode first. Then change it back to fullscreen and then it works. Very wierd. Also the problem with the ini reseting is still there.

Silly question, but can you lock the .ini to read only after making the chances?

Yeah that seems to hold me down for now. Thanks for the help.
