Which NPC would be the best thief for the party? (good)

I like to play small parties (four this time) and am just about to pick a side to get Imoen back. Right now I use my PC (inquisitor), Anomen, Yoshimo, and Neera. When I get rid of Yoshimo who do I replace him with? Can Hexxat party with good characters? I know her secret so it wouldn't make sense with a Paladin and Anomen. Do I keep Imoen then? I don't like spells that much to have two casters. I mostly like the thief doing the archery for my group but I haven't met any that would be good in that role.

How about Jan? He's neutral and while being multiclass and a caster, he still levels as a thief and has a neat ranged weapon.

    Jan's a pretty awesome thief.

Definitely Jan, like has already been said. He brings alot to the table and is generally a little bit underrated. His Pickpocketing, Open Locks, Find Traps and Detect Illusion skills are all pretty good (or above average) when you first get him, and since he's an illusionist you don't really need him to have any points in stealth skills.

I guess Jan it is. Its really too bad there isn't a Swashbuckler or F/T NPC to drag around.

I agree with the consensus here, even though I've only started playing BG2:EE recently. Jan is the best choice and is really surprisingly good.

Of course, I am running with Jan and Hexxat as well, so... I like having thief skills around. ^_^

I too like 4-man parties with a good mix that included a pure thief, so back in the day I'd just use Shadowkeeper to change Imoen's class once I got her back.

I've heard of using Shadowkeeper but I'm new to Baulder's Gate or rather I played it when I was young and do not remember anything about it. I never had a need for it in Bgee because I found enough characters I liked.

Imoen may gain levels as a mage, but she's still a capable thief and can serve well as an archer - just take her.

If you are going to use it I would use EE Keeper instead of Shadowkeeper. Shadowkeeper has had some recent problems specifically with the 1.2 patch of BGEE, and its probably best you stick with EE keeper (if you are going to use it).

As many have said, Jan is really your best choice here. I have played through the game many times with Jan as my primary theif, and he is very capable and even has a few useful spells to go with. He also gets HLA's as thief and can get access to some super awesome traps and use any item etc. (No Paladin for Carsomyr? Whats up Jan Jansen weilding holy avenger!). He can make use of one of the best ranged weapons in the game (Firetooth crossbow).

But really, if you haven't used Jan in a party before, aside from his extreme usefulness, his character and dialogue is very funny and he has a ton of interaction with all party members (I think more than any other companion).

That said, if you are only looking for somebody to pick locks and find traps, then just stick with Yoshimo till Imoen comes back. However, if you are looking for the full thief package with a lot of good dialogue then you really can't beat Jan.
