BG2EE NPC quest areas

Can you access most of the new content without putting the new npcs in your party?

To elaborate, is it like the old npc quests where you can do the main quest (eg: nalia's keep) without using the npcs and only actually need to use them for their smaller (and generally low treasure) side quests?
