Purpose of second "reward" for the cats quest? (SPOILERS)

So once you complete the quest in the wild mage refuge, you get the choice of having a cat. However, I can't figure out exactly what it does. It doesn't function like a figurine (i.e. cerberus moon dog), nor does it do anything when you place it on the ground.

Does it have some other function? Does it eat Boo? Has anyone figured out what purpose it serves? Or does it just take up an inventory slot?
