A New Alignment System

In Baldur's Gate I always felt like you chose an alignment as being more of a formality. Torment changed this alot by starting you off, and your actions shifted your alignment whichever way.
I think that this game should put alignment as a much bigger feature! It IS a huge roleplaying game, I think that if you get to choose at the beginning, then Dialogue choices and other choices should shift dramatically (example: If you're good, there might be certain quests you cannot get as a result or rewards or dialogue choices, vice versa for neutral and evil)
OR shift it in a way that you can start with a certain alignment, but it shifts by what you do (Kind of like torment) As in, if you decide to start acting lawfully when you're chaotic, it starts moving up, or if you start being good when you're evil and vice versa! Perhaps this is impossible, but I think as a roleplaying game, either of these would be very interesting!
Any thoughts?
