Area effects go away when you leave an area and return immediately

I've noticed several times that, when an enemy launches an area effect spell such as Stinking Cloud or Cloudkill, it goes away simply by leaving the area and returning. For example, on the second floor of the tanner shop in the bridge district, I accidentally set off a trap with a cloud effect and so high-tailed it back up the stairs -- I immediately sent down a hasted thief (Yoshimo) to run through the cloud and check for any other traps while the rest of the party waited upstairs for the area effect to wear off (which makes perfect game sense) -- only to find that the cloud spell was gone. I did some further testing in other areas and concluded that this always happens with AOE spells, whether I trigger then via traps, cast them as a spell, or wait for an enemy to cast them.
I'd like this to change -- it ends up making me unintentionally cheat when I react "normally" to an AOE by moving my characters back to the previous area to apply appropriate buffs before going back in. The AOE should finish out its time before ending.
