Duel class mage/kensai issue (SOLVED)

So after the 1000's of discussions about kensai/mage combinations being amazing i decided to give it a go but i seem to be having issues. I got to level 9 in bg2 and duel classed to kensai/mage and now im restricted to only being a mage which means i can't equip any swords (or any fighter related equipment) however all the kensai/mage guides describe which swords they use etc and i was wondering whether this is normal or whether its a bug or something else I'm not quite understanding?

    Your kensai class is inactive, you have to reach level 10 as a mage before you can use kensai abilities (like wielding swords) again.
