Unable to import BG EE character?

When starting a new game in BG2 EE, i am unable to import my BG EE character from the BG EE saved game.

Is there a way to get this done?

    i see. ok thanks. any idea how this will affect the specific magic items brought over via the BG1 to BG2 import? will i still get the specific BG1 item in the game or will it be reset to default like if you start BG2 with a new character?
