Ranger/Cleric proficiency points in BGEE.

Hello all,

This is my first attempt at playing the Baldur's Gate series, so forgive me for being a novice. I'm working on my first character, who happens to be a ranger/cleric multiclass, but am at a loss when it comes to proficiency points. I've heard that flails/maces are good, but also that slings are a must because they are the only ranged option for a ranger/cleric. Would putting 2 prof points in flails and maces be a mistake? Also, does anyone know if you can reallocate your prof points when you port your character over to BGEE2?

Thanks! =)

Eh, honestly I don't see having a ranged option as particularly necessary. It can help in the beginning of the game, sure, but after the first few levels you'll never use that sling again.

Warhammers and maces are actually the best choices in the first game. You won't get a great flail until BG2.

I agree. You can find great mace and hammer just at the beginning of the game which makes the choice even easier. Then third pip in two weapon style

    The best for cler/rang:
2 points into mace for the stun mace+1/mace of distruption.
2 points into warhammer for the electrical warhammer+1/cromfayer.
3 points into 2 wep fighting.

    DO IT!

I never pick the third pip in two weapon style. -2 thac0 for offhand is not worth it. Strength bonus, weapon bonuses, and specialization (or greater/master if you're pure fighter or dual classed) really makes for it.

The 3rd pip in two weapon style helps you use any weapon you don't have pips in as your off-hand weapon. That's because for fighters (and rangers) the thac0 penalty for non-profificient weapons is -2.
If I want to use a war hammer in my offhand, 1 pip in war hammers or the 3rd pip in two weapon styles results in the same thac0.

If you end up using weapons you aren't proficient in, then you have done something wrong with your planning. You can determine fairly easily what weapons you will have access to at what point in the game, and spend your points accordingly. Unless you're running with a setup that makes such planning impossible (for whatever reason, mods, personal challenge, whatever), you should never end up with a weapon but no proficiency point for it.

I'm with @thespace on the sling, its absolutely worth putting two points into from the beginning. Specializing in a second melee weapon is not nearly as useful as having a missile weapon available.

ranger/cleric can do anything decently, but dual wielding seems the most ideal with the way the points fall (two points initially in two-weapon fighting? That's begging for dual-wielding). I'd say put 2 points in warhammers for starters, since there's a really good one you can get early on in the game. You can pretty much just use that one with a shield for the majority of the game, then put remaining points into Flails and probably one last point in Two Weapon fighting.

    For BGEE, start with:

    ** Mace
    ** Warhammer
** Two Weapon Fighting (free with Ranger class)

You'll get 2 more points by the end of BGEE, put these into:

** Flail for the Flail of Ages in BG2EE, the best weapon in the entire series, and also the Defender of Easthaven.
