Question about Mage class

I've always wondered if its worth it to choose a mage class like diviner or enchanter or any other. As far as i've seen that only limits their ability.

ideas?

It absolutely is worth picking a specialization, but pick carefully so you don't give up anything substantial. The top two picks in my opinion are Conjurers who only give up divination, which is largely useless anyway, and secondly Necromancer, who gives up illusion, you do lose a few good spells that way (mirror image and improved invisibility), but you can make do with stoneskin and the staff of the magi.

How does specializing benefit you? Been a long time since i've played, and I was a kid then

You get to cast an extra spell per spell level ( which contrary to AD&D rules doesn't even have to be of your specialist school). That leads to Jan playing more like a full fledged invoker stacked up with magic missiles and fireballs :)

Oooh. I always got annoyed at how few high level spells I could have. An extra would be awesome. I'm currently trying to figure out if my tablet that runs windows 8 can play BG2EE, hopefully it can!

I agree that it is absolutely worth it to specialize in most cases, unless you are determined to be a jack-of-all-trades (and honestly, a bard is better for that anyway). This is doubly true with gnomes, since they have no choice in the matter, but gain the benefit of being able to specialize AND multiclass. And with that said, I'd add Illusionists to Sceptenar's list. They lose a few decent necro spells, but they aren't really lacking in useful spells of all types.
