Can't get into the Pit of the Unseeing Eye

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
I don't know whether this counts as a bug, or if I'm just not doing it right. I got the quest and the key from Gaal, I mouse over the pit. I talk to Tad. Nothing.

    Are you familiar with the quest or just skimming through a walkthrough? 'cause after getting the key you need to go back a bit and talk to Sassar (you haven't met him yet), then head down to an old temple, get an item, back to Sassar, THEN to Tad. Sorry if you already knew =)

    It's been a long time since I last waded through the whole game. But I would swear that I couldn't get that door open previously when backtracking. Now it opens. Thanks.
