Who else saves right after Irenicus' dungeon?

I save after the dungeon, but that's mainly because I save a lot regardless. I have never done what you suggest as I always know what class I want to take through the game, and more often than not I play through the original game first with them anyway.

For what it's worth, there is a mod called Dungeon Be Gone that allows you to skip Irenicus' Dungeon but still get the XP and items. You might want to look into that.

Hmm, my alternate realities tend to happen with subsequent play throughs. I have too many under my belt at this point to be comfortable mentioning.

I typically save all my games right after exiting the "starting" area (Candlekeep, Irenicus's Dungeon) for each new character in case I want to try a different path with the same character at a later date. I also tend to save at the end of each chapter (although I overwrite the previous chapter) so that I have a solid "restore" point in case something goes terribly wrong or I just decide I want to back up and try something different.

I normally just suck it up and go through it. You can save a lot of time if you use CTRL-J
