Fighter/Thief dual proficiency question

Kind of a noobish question, but here goes: When I get gack the fighter abilities can I put more than one pip in weapon proficiencies when leveling up as a thief? If so can I max them?

Yes you can, but bear in mind that your thief levels wont gain as many proficiency points as quickly as your fighter levels did.

When dual classing from a fighter, its best to choose which weapon you want to use and reach grandmastery before dual classing, then when your fighter levels reactivate, you have immediate access to grandmastery.

Ok, thanks. I don't know if I need GM right away though. I'm thinking about dualing at fighter level three and I know it's not optimal in a power gaming sense. But it's good to know I can still get GM if I need to.

You should dual at level 7 minimum for the extra 0.5 attack per round, level 9 for max fighter hit die, or level 13 for another 0.5 attack per round.

You gain almost nothing dualing at level 3.

I know but it's more of a role playing thing and also keeping charname from being OP. I do get access to better proficiencies anyway. I would be stuck with only one pip as a plain thief.

You'll still get GM by thief 8 if you dual at ftr 3, so it's not that bad.

you can also get GM by thief 8 if you dual at fighter 7. I would say I recommend fighter 7 for hit points, apr and still reaching GM in BG1

Yes, but if you don't want the down time ftr 3 is brilliant.

What do you even need 3 fighter levels for then?

Fighter 3 gives you an extra proficiency pip without forcing you to waste any non-starting thief pips. If your goal is to hit GM in the BG1 XP cap, you need to dual at 3 at the earliest and 7 by the latest. Three levels gets you GM while minimizing downtime.

And not just an extra proficiency, access to more than being just proficient with a weapon.

I like to dual Shar-Teel over to thief once she hits Fighter level 3 (once I respec her initial weapon choices anyway). She gains GM in longbow, specialised in short sword and can throw on full plate and shield in a straight up melee fight whilst losing nothing with regards to her thieving skills.
