Single Class Fighter Weapon proficiency question

So if you were to take a fighter from level 1 aaaaalll the way to the end of ToB. What weapon type would you GM in. Something thats going to be as useful at level 1 as it is at level 30+. What would you suggest. (keeping in mind all the new goodies added to BG1 and 2EE)

I'd pick Flail, because of Flail of Ages, but there are other choices. I select different ones for RP (I'm playing a halberd berserker now) and because the missile weapon-to shield and weapon (or dual) forcing me to inventory is a pain.
