Will main quest progression hinder side quests?

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
I have already made a couple of mistakes in losing quests by progressing too far in another. I can no longer get the flail for example. I now have several ch.2 side quests but I have plenty of gold to pay the dude that wants to help me find Imoen. If I pay him, will I ruin other quests?

    Nope. Just be prepared to check one chapter back in your journal :P

    You can even go ahead and advance the story to chapter 4 and wrap up your chapter 2 quests when you return in chapter 6.
