Compatibility Mode and Multiplayer

Trying to start a multiplayer. The other player has a Lenovo t61 laptop, and has to play the game in compatibility mode (win98). Whenever he tries to join my game, or when I join his, his game crashes. If he does not run compatibility mode he experiences problems with scrambled texts appearing randomly and other graphics errors, and game crashes. However, if he can make it to multiplayer before a crash he can join my game.

Any ideas? Particularly, does anyone know if there's another work around for older computers experiencing these types of graphical issues or for the compatibility moded game to successfully join a multiplayer?

EDIT: Apparently he never actually updated his drivers when it came up. So problem solved.
