Petition: Should the developpers be able to change/add the original content (for BG2:EE)?

Currently, based on contractual limitation, the developers are not allowed to change/add to/extend the original content. This means that certain changes/additions/extensions cannot be made in the game (for example, more dialogue between original characters).

If we as community support the developers in these changes, show that we give our faith that they will keep the spirit of the game and only make it a truly enhanced version, they can convince the license-owners that changes/additions/extensions are supported and the game will be sold regardless.

Since these terms are already fixed for BG1:EE, maybe they can be re-negotiated for BG2:EE? (as suggested by @Nimz).

@kamuizin: Changed the name of the poll: added 'petition'.

Sorry that I sound skeptic, but I dont think that this poll will have any affect a month and a half before release..

also, I think making a poll on a specific aspect of the game ( example NPC interactions ) will have more impact, if any...

we have got nothing to lose I guess.

    P.S
Anyone know if they are allowed to change/add things to the original content in a form of DLC???

They can only add content, improve engine, correct bugs etc... and I think it may have been the best option.

@mch202 Yes, I agree, 1,5 months before release will have no effect. Despite this, I think/hope it will have an effect to BG2, which could benefit by some more improvements (since BG1:EE will be in the (improved) BG2 engine, there should be even more improvements/enhancements).

Even if it was 3 years before I doubt it would have an effect. Corporate contracts are hellish. I think that they should be able to since, I mean... the game already exists, if you want to play Baldur's Gate get a copy of the original. The fact that they can't change much is what makes me skeptical of whether or not the game will really be all that interesting, if that makes sense.

I think that they should have the option to change or update originial content, especially in circumstances where features were not fully implemented or cut prior to release (Jan & Minsc's BG2 quests etc).

However being able to and being obligated to are different things, something that I believe the Dev team understand. Just because they could change things doesn't mean that vast overhauls are needed - a line of dialogue here & there goes a long way.

I would even support a delayed release date to improve it as best as they can. It's Baldur's Gate we're talking about!

change is risky in terms of creating unbalanced or misplaced contend, but since developers seem to follow the "do not fix what is not broken" i would agree to change. there are many instances that could be more fleshed out, not to mention more developed characters, moral and reputation system, class and leveling options an balance... list does go on.

I do support change to the original game. I think it could be made better with some changes and new content to bulk it out and make it even more epic then it already is.

However now that bg:ee is coming out i think it will be harder to find the original vanilla game so if they did ever change original content an option t keep the original would be wonderful. Everyone has different styles of play and may love a feature/story everybody else hates and wants changed.

I support changes to the original content if they added the following features...

-Banter and Interjections for existing party members like the "BG1 NPC Project" mod except made it canon.
-Making Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma have a more active role in dialogue like Planescape Torment.
-Fixing and Finishing incomplete content like the "Unfinished Business" mods and also made canon.
-3rd Edition rules when it comes to Ability Scores. I think it's a complete joke that you need to have 16 or more points in an attribute in order to get any bonuses at all.
-Portraits for major characters like the ones in Throne of Bhaal.
-The option to have a bigger party.

Good thing the game will be more moddable because if I can't have these, then I'll resort to mods to make it so. It would just save me time and effort to already have these features every time I install the game.

Of course they should but they can't. This is an improdutive Thread. A better one would be a pool with the following title:

    - Customer's petition for Atari to soft or review the original content protection clause.

Edit: With all due respect, vote in no change on the original content is stupid, part of the original team that make BG is working here, the game don't have a new engine, 2012 graphics and other things, it's not an HD remake.

Who don't want changes should simply play the original game and don't bother with the enhanced edition.

The chose on install already exist, use the old game or boy the enhanced edition.

I'm still pissed off that they're not allowed to touch the original content. I really wished the two games could have been bridged and that we could have gotten more character development and NPC interactions. To me this was the most important thing. I really don't care for these new NPC's when there was so much to work on with the existing ones. For instance Kivan doesn't even say a word when meeting Tazok the man who murdered his wife. The duke doesn't say a word to his daughter Ski, same thing with Shar-Teel I don't think she even has one interaction with her father and the party interactions are very minimal all through the game.

I'll be buying this game because I'm a BG addict and I would keep playing it regardless but mostly for the fact that by buying it I'll be encouraging the devs to create BG3 in the future. I am still very bummed out about the no change to existing content thing however and I still hold a foolish hope that maybe it can be changed so good idea to create this poll @phyrax.

I accidentally voted against :\ Is there a way to change my vote?

To be fair, I'm still a little hesitant about allowing them to change the original content, as so many things could go wrong with that. I'd prefer it if they would perhaps be allowed to ADD to the original content, like adding in additional NPC interactions and whatnot... It would be terrible if they just started changing things entirely here, making it seem almost like an entirely different game if things go wrong.

Perhaps though I'm simply being paranoid. If there is one thing from the original content I would change rather than add to... (Adding is like adding it so that Xan is in BG2 or Kivan says something to Tazok) It would be to change the quest with Keldorn and his wife... seriously... wtf was up with that quest o_O How was it Keldorn's fault? She knew she was marrying a cop Paladin.

What's the point of a enhanced edition if the original content doens't change. If we can't learn with the past mistakes, we can't change what has gone wrong... it's a regression.

Beside all of this. I think there's plenty of stuff that can be added without changing the original content. Actually, everything is possible.

Furthermore, i think it would be better if the original content remain unchanged and new stuff is added for the simple reason that everyone will enjoy new genuine content.

If the original content is modified, some players will hate, others will love. But if new content is included. I think everyone will be able to enjoy the new side-story

They should definitely be able to change the original content

I was quite surprised and upset when I realised they were not allowed to do this.

I can live without HD gfx, but not being able to change original content is a shame :(

Edit: I would like to think they could re-negotiate these terms for BG2:EE, especially if BG:EE is successful

To be honest, I don't think that this is the place to post such a petition. It's not Beamdog who is making this decision, but the original developer/developers.

The original content is so elite. That's why it's the best game ever. But, the originals are already in tact, so I wouldn't frown upon some content adjustment. (Don't get carried away though). :D
