Replacing NPC portraits: Do you do it?

Lately I've been ranting about the BG2 portraits a lot because frankly every time I see them I sort of want to gouge out my eyes. I've overridden every single one of mine and am very pleased with my party's appearance now.

Two characters, Nalia and Mazzy, I don't really think even fit their portraits. That's just not how I picture them, and I especially hate the hair. Why is Bioware so obsessed with that same random braided shoulder-length style? I've replaced both ladies with completely different appearances altogether:

This is what I use for Nalia:

When I saw it I immediately thought it was perfect. A young noble girl with a slightly defiant look to her eyes but still overall poised and proper. Her hair is neat and simple but not overly fussed over.

And for Mazzy:

from the original Neverwinter Nights
Just looks far more like a proper knight to me, and I can hear her voice from that image more too. I just ignore the hair color inconsistency.

It's made me curious if others ever do this. Are there any NPCs that you picture differently in your mind? Have you ever seen a picture and thought that it really fits an NPC better than their default one?

I think this portrait pack: http://artastrophe.deviantart.com/art/PaintBG-v2-409324931 looks really good, but, me being me, I haven't gotten around to using it yet.

EDIT: hurr durr I cant link

I actually enjoy Nalia and Mazzy's portraits. I think it fits their characters well.

A few that I do switch are Imoen, Minsc and Jahiera. I change them back to their BG1 portraits because I think they look better. I don't know what they did to Jaheira in BG2, but it never really sat well with me.

Enkida and Miloch made a few cosmetic alterations to many of the BG2 portraits that made them look so much better (Mazzy with short hair! Jaheira with braids! Imoen with a flip cut! No more plastic crap and rings in everyone's hair!) - that's about as far as I'd go in terms of replacing existing NPC portraits.

I don't mind their original portraits but I like those two you gave!

I remember picking the second one for my NWN character and it'll be nice to see it in BG2. I think the first one needs to be Baldurized a bit before I use it though it does fit quite well.

Oh, and I use the Willow pic for Imoen in BG1. I think it fits her perfectly.

But I use her default one in BG2 because she's more melancholy in that game.

I love this one for Coran too. His default picture looks pretty stupid but this one makes him the dashing rogue he's supposed to be.

I use the paint BG mod, though I often use a bunch of Arta's alternative portraits for various characters. I always like my portraits to be stylistically similar, and I prefer her renditions in a lot (but not all) cases.

I always want to do this, but it's just to much trouble for me to find the right portraits for all the NPCs. I've mostly just replaced characters such as Viconia in BG with her BG2 portrait.

@shawne Ohhh I actually quite like those. Nalia's hair is cute there, but I dunno. As soon as I'd seen that picture by hel999 it just... stuck.

@nano Agreed. Coran's supposed to be a lady killer and he looks like a psychopath in his portrait. Sometimes I make more of an effort to Baldurize than others. I liked that first picture too much to mess with it. I did put a decent amount of effort into one for Anomen in an attempt to hate him less. Problem is now he's so hot I forgive him for more than I should. /shallow

I still wish I'd smoothed it more. And he needs more shadows around his neck... Augh why am I so fussy?!

@Eudaemonium I do love her Edwin stuff! I have a tendency to prefer really 'smooth' looking art though, so I never did DL her pack.

I didn't particularly like original BG portraits either on first impression, and used custom portraits for all the NPCs in my party in my first playthrough. However, as I played BG 2, the character and personality of the characters really shone through, and I began to picture the NPCs as their original portraits, so now I kinda regret some of the choices I made.

That said, there are some absolutely amazing artwork out there that are not only fit well within the BG art style, but also capture the personality of the characters and improves on the original artwork, particularly for characters where I feel the originals didn't do the character themselves justice, like Imoen.

@SassyGoldElf: Yes, I had noticed that you posted on her deviantart page XD You may have noticed that I commented on her response to your comment XD (Edwin fans unite!) [My favourite Edwin is probably the hood down with hair one, the 'Sir Wizard' one, but I'm also a big fan of her default bald tattooed Edwin]

There are a few of Arta's representations that I'm not much a fan of, and she often does things like removing distinctive scars or facial markings that I'm not always on board with, but in general I really like her style and having artistic consistency is, like I said, fairly important for me in terms of immersion.

I replaced all the portraits for custom ones because iPad don't let you select custom one because the damned screen is damn to tiny. And also I could relate most of them (still wondering why Quayle looks like a hooded Elf. Also, I did this because I tend to play solo runs instead of complete party runs.

I don't replace, but I might slightly edit...

I gave Imoen a fat nose, since I run her as a gnome. My own character's portrait will slowly change if I play through the whole saga. Gaining scars and such after being tortured by Irenicus. But completely changing the looks of a character I've known for about 15 years is just too much.

I agree with this so much. Imoen is just so... sad in BG2 but I liked the pink hair. I liked how Minsc was petting Boo in BG1, but Boo was cuter and facing the "camera" in the second, so its a tossup.

However Jaheira? Best portrait in BG1. In BG2 she looks like ET's girlfriend.

I also HATE the braided short hair look that they always go for. Jaheira's cornrows with metal rings was especially bizarre. What was that? Chain mail for her hair?

Actually I think one character did improve in BG2, and that is Viconia. I doubt anyone really disagrees with that one.

The one portrait I always hated was Ajantis. He's supposed to be a young squire yet he looks like a middle aged samurai. The "Generic Handsome Man in Plate Armor" that most people use for their warriors would have been a better choice for him.

Also.... wtf was with that Cherokee Apache Warrior Elf with the goofie expression? I made a silly bard with him once but never got far. I wonder if anyone actually used that for their character?

    I do it.

@SassyGoldElf Yeah, I love the dangerous look Coran has in his eyes in that pic. He's like the James Bond of BG1. Charming, well-spoken and hit with the ladies but the deadliest assassin there is. I really hate what happened to him in BG2.

I like that Anomen portrait, I might steal that one too :D Yeah, he has that smolder going on... but between good looks and a crappy personality you could say it averages out to 13 charisma.

I changed Mazzy's pic in my game and Shadowkeepered her hair to match. It's very weird seeing her with a different face after all this time with the default pic. But it is an improvement.

I've replaced Jaheira's, Viconia's, Imoen's and Neera's. But now that people mention it, I suppose Mazzy's doesn't really seem all that knight-like either... I should fix hers too.
  • booinyoureyesbooinyoureyes Member Posts: 6,164
    you really replaced Viconia's?
  • SilverstarSilverstar Member Posts: 2,207

    you really replaced Viconia's?

Yes and no. It's basically the same picture but with dark skin instead of blue (so she looks like a Drow rather than a Na'vi) and a purple hood... not sure the hood needed a colour change but I don't mind.
  • booinyoureyesbooinyoureyes Member Posts: 6,164
ooohhh. I thought you meant back to her Baldur's Gate I pic. I've seen a similarly adjusted one floating around that I really liked.

Nalia looks like Drew Barrymore. Just one more reason to never ever ever take her along :P

I replaced Neera's, Dorn's, both of Viconia's, Irenicus' and Hexxat's portraits with custom ones.

I don't replace any. I like the style of the BG1 portraits a lot, I actually wish there were more.

BG2 on the other hand, I actually somewhat dislike those portraits....but I still don't replace them. I guess I'm just attached to them.

Well, I have my reasons. :3

I have posted a couple of other versions of this portrait within the Alternate NPC and PC portraits thread, but I like this new version the best. :)

Yes. I do. I just play all-female parties, so I use custom portraits for Imoen, Jaheira, Branwen, Clara, Hexxat, Nalia, Faldorn, Aerie, Neera and Viconia.

I change the portraits for most of my npcs, and use a custom one for my hero too. The only thing all the portraits have in common is that they're all in completely different styles. But, I don't change Valygar's portrait. It's actually fairly difficult to find a suitable replacement for him.

With me, I do not change the portraits, yet when I first played Baldur's Gate 2, I found myself asking my computer "Why is Jaheira suddenly an alien?"
