Rather than BG3, how about BG2:EE's expansion? (or maybe Torment)

I'm trying to think from a business perspective. If you guys make an entire new game (BG3), it would take a lot of time and resources. An entire new story would have to be made, and honestly, I think it would take a large developer or lots of donations to fund an epic game such as BG3 should be. If it turns out that it's not good enough, then bad reviews follow, and people just won't purchase it. A new game takes way too long without being a large developer or having a large pool of funding.

But there's another choice which is a lot less riskier: a new expansion to BG2 or a re-make of Torment would take significantly less work (the material is already there), you can use the same engines. Torment already has a great story, so most people would just expect UI and major graphic overhaul.

BG2:EE's expansion could be an additional expansion that takes place between SoA and ToB, you guys already made new places in the EE version so it would just mean using the same tools to make new areas and putting new enemies, items, kits, spells, etc. If it adds enough content, then the BG2 veterans who didn't buy BG2:EE would be seduced into buying both BG2:EE AND its expansion (because expansion won't work without EE).

Torment's combat could be changed a little bit to fit more of IWD/BG's combat style, but because the graphics look so outdated, most people would prioritize that. People will buy Torment's Enhancement even if it's not great, because people love that game so much (Kickstarter for Numenera Torment is the most funded project). So people will buy it if you make it no matter what.

I would love BG3 to happen. I just don't think it's smart to do it now, especially because it would require a much more funding and time to do it. But maybe we can backtrack and think other options first.

Torment's graphics are no more outdated that those of the BG series. Even less, I would argue. The widescreen mod allows you to play at a respectable viewing distance, and with it, the gorgeous backgrounds of the game really shine.

The beauty of Torment's art is readily made apparent when you start getting to place like the Upper Ward. Without widescreen, it looks terrible and outdated, but with it, and the new resolutions, it looks no worse than an isometric RPG that would be made today (if the emphasis was put on stylized art and pre-rendered backgrounds, mind you).

The only thing tripping Torment, art-wise, are the character sprites.

^They do look quite decent for such an old game. The sprites do look horrible though. I just hated "feel" of the combat in PS:T compared to BG2. And the magic system/animation =(

I think if the devs can grab a hold of the original artwork, then they can do a major graphic overhaul, 3D-HD with isometric, with maybe Dragonage-esque talk scenes every time you initiate dialogue? plus combat / UI change
