Stalker backstab weapons

Do stalkers need to use a 'thief' weapon in order to backstab, or can they use any weapon?
(E.g., could Valygar backstab someone using a spear instead of a katana?)

    Thief weapons only.

    As far as I know - only Thief weapons.
    For a Stalker, your best bet is a LongSword. (Varscona in BGEE and any good LongSword in BG2EE)

    Thanks! Looks like Valygar will be sticking with katanas (if I keep him in my group)...

    Can Stalkers use quarterstaves? I think they can... Staves are usually the best weapons to backstab with, because you can easily find pretty strong ones (+3 or Staff of Striking in BG1, +4 and Staff of the Ram in BG2) and you only do one backstab attack anyway so dual-wield doesn't matter. Feel free to switch back to it after the backstab, though!

    Celistial Fury will be badass all SOA. In TOB you will probably switch mainhand to a longsword since +3 on CF is to low at times.

    Scimitars and longswords if you're playing regular BG1EE or BG2EE. Short Swords if you're using Rogue Rebalancing for that sexy Short Sword of Backstabbing +3 buff.

    Valygar's family katana is proving to be quite nice for backstabbing mages. The poison effect helpfully interrupts their spell casting after the attack.

    Yes. And even though he is not as wacky as Minsc or Jan, or as brooding as Dorn or Edwin, or as psychotic as Korgan...he is still a pretty good character.
