Post Underdark Areas

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
So the areas that open up after the Underdark. The Forest Tethir, Small Teeth Past, and I think the High Forest. Other than the way to the Elven city being in one of them what does these areas do and/have to them? Quest wise and the like.

Or are they there to throw some more of the sandbox element into the game? To make it more like BG1.

    Not much going on there.. a mini quest, some fights, some stuff - that's it.
