How many mages is too many?

So I'm about to begin another full playthrough of the whole trilogy, and I find myself running into the same problem that has plagued me since I first played this game all those years ago.

I can't not take Nalia in my party.

Despite what seems to be fairly popular opinion 'round these parts, Nalia has always been my favorite NPC, and I find it impossible to pass on her. The problem is, I also can't pass on Imoen, and I want to finally give Neera a try.

That leaves me with at the very least a 3 mage party before I even consider who else to bring along, and it got me thinking:

What is the most amount of spell casters YOU personally can/will bring while still drawing pleasure from the game. Knowing that each additional mage lowers the difficulty exponentially, where do you draw the line/find the balance?

I usually have two arcane casters, sometimes three. At least one can reach the highest levels as a mage (pure mage or dualled to mage, like Edwin or Nalia or Imoen), the other can be multi-class (like Jan Jansen or Aerie) or a bard.

Yup.. like Montresor_SP, I also usually have at least 2 arcane casters, but often even more (3-4) -> but if I have that many (3-4), then there are at least 2 among them, which are dual or multi-class chars.

I always thought about doing a playthrough with an arcane-magic-focused party:

Sorcerer PC, Xzar, Edwin, Neera, Xan, Qualye

    Overkill.

I must be the worst at using mages and magic in general because I wouldn't take extra mages unless I wanted to CHALLENGE myself and make the difficulty HIGHER.

That said, nearly all my parties will usually have one and a half mage.
By that I mean one who advances only in mage levels (single- or dual-class) and one that doesn't (multi-class or Bard) So for example, Imoen and Aerie, Edwin and Jan, or Nalia and Haer'Dalis.

More than one in BG. More than two in BG2.

Personal bias, but I will bend over backwards to have a "balanced" party, ie no more than one of each class with minimal overlap in roles. This is easier to do in the first game than the second, as SoA seems to have so many dual and multi NPCs.

2 seems to be the magic number for mages (magic, mages, ha ha) and if nalia is your favorite good on you, she was bound to be someones, to me i usually have her and neera if im not a mage, if i do play a mage sadly its me and neera but nalia is my go to theif. (well im going to use Hexxat next playthrough) but i digress

a party of 6 i usually split it into 3 melee 3 ranged one ranged weapon person (usually my theif/or a decent dex fighter) and 2 mages

right now, I'm playing a no reload game with 1 thief, one Fighter/Thief, a Bard, an Enchanter, a Sorceror, and a Necromancer. A little too much magic, not enough tanking for me.

Heh... I will get some time with 5 spellcasters :)

Main char fighter 13 -> mage, Imoen, Haerdalis, Neera, Jaheira, Jan Jansen.

It should be good challenge until main char get fighters levels back :) No tank, no good physical damage dealer.

^ you have Jaheira, great tank and physical damage dealer :)

Magic intensive parties take a lot of micromanagement.

I once played a game with:
    Kensai/Mage
    Anomnomen
    Cernd
    Aerie
    Imoen
    Jan Jansen

And while certainly fun, to get the most out of this group I needed to manage all of their spells, constantly.

Granted, I also waltzed through Watchers Keep around level 11-12 with these guys. All those summons.

i have 3 casters in my current run-through of BG2EE
Nalia (my thief), Neera, & myself (CL/MU)...
I'm planning on leaving Imoen in Spellhold

She is just good fighter :)

Great tank is Kagain (with dex gauntlets) ;)

2 max 3 arcane casters. And in order to get the latter I'll be stuck in caster central with my current planned bg2ee canon party.

    PC dwarven fighter/cleric
    Jaheria
    Minsc
    Aerie
    Haer'dalis
Yoshimo -> Imoen (I'll prolly take nalia along for a bit depending.
  • I usually won't go over 3, but 4 or more is doable if you just pay attention to who is scribing what. You don't want one of your mages to end up with no useful high level spells, after all. I'd still make sure to have a couple of people who can deal significant damage without spells, though, as killing everything with spells gets tedious fast.

I'm doing a run with F/M Jaheira, Hexxat, Neera, Nalia and Viconia right now but its a bit annoying to have to buff for some fairly normal fights. Then again, on Insane with SCS, non-stone/iron skin characters tend to get chunked in 2 hits (note viconia with -8 or 9 ac at level 10 and getting chunked repeatedly)...

    @Itstucktwice

Do you ever play Evil? Try it this time around. Neera, being neutral, should work in an evil party (though I haven't played with her in BG2 yet so I may be wrong), and this gives you a solid reason to skip Nalia and Imoen.

    @Kaigen

I'd say that once you hit 4 you probably want at least one of them to be a sorcerer. I don't remember about BG2's scroll availability, but I know in BG1, even having only 2 arcane casters, I often screwed up and didn't learn the spells for my bard first.

I'm fairly certain there is only 1 copy of Spook and 2 copies of Glitterdust in all of BGEE.

In all seriousness I generally keep to a 2 mage rule. That applies to both BG1 and BG2. One mage is often the 'secondary', so in some way not a pure class, or a sorcerer. They handle debuffs, mage-specific buffs, and compensate for their lack of offensive magic with additional weapon proficiencies. The mage has the cathartic fireball, chain lightning, horrid wilting and dragon's breath spells alongside an array of the other arcane essentials.
PS. @itstucktwice you are certainly not alone in loving Nalia. If you are in doubt, search out pretty much every other post I make on these forums lol :)

Does each additional mage really lower the difficulty exponentially? I haven't really found that.
I always feel the need for more tankers when I take three mages.
If I was to use your party I'd make my cleric not squishy and a decent melee fighter, as in take Anomen or make a cleric/fighter of some sort. I seem to have trouble personally with even 3 pure casters, which I'm using in my current game (plus I'm playing a Blade).

Well in my current play through, SCS on Insane, there seems no way to build a "tank" so the tackiest characters are my mages, stone skin, mirror image, resist buffs and invulnerability protected by SI: Abjuration is the only thing that lasts more than a few hits. The only reason Hexxat hasn't been chunked is her invulnerable form and Viconia gets chunked forcing a reload every other fight... She has -10 AC but the hits that connect result in chunking...

I like 2. 1 support (debilitate, buff, debuff), 1 artillery. This isn't gospel for me but it's a good guideline to start from.

Sometimes I may take on a third, but it would have to be a multiclass (c/m,t/m,f/m,etc.)

    Three seems a little much.
