Boss fight should get more dangerous at near-death

I think boss fights would be more exciting if the boss gains new abilities when they are near-death. The justification is that when people/animals are on the death ground, they naturally become more ferocious and fight till their last ounce of energy is spent.

Some ideas at near-death status:
-receive 1/2 less damage
-do 2 times more damage
-critical hit on a roll of 16 and above
-saving throw +5 bonus
-instant spell casting (ok, this is somewhat cheating)
