Petrification facts?

I'm curious to know some details about petrification...

When petrified/turned to stone, does a character still age? Does their equipment become petrified too? (i.e. could someone chip away at the stone and find some gems)

I imagine petrificated people still age, albeit much slower than normal. Or at least the stone itself ages as it become corroded from weather, water, and hostle turnips. Anything those poor sods wear, have equiped or possess in their inventory also changes into sold stone. And if they are really unlucky they'll suffer from nephroliths as well.

Being stoned, doesn't stop the aging process, it just makes you really mellow about the whole thing man. Chill out....

Hard to say. The stone itself can of course age, but there's no telling if aging stone would translate into biological aging when the person is turned back, nor how much if so. Since a petrified person's biological body for all intents and purposes doesn't exist while petrification lasts, it seems to make at least as much sense that they wouldn't age at all.

In literature, chips and cracks to the stone form usually end up translating into injury to the 'restored' person once the spell is lifted. Other than that and the fact that they are usually aware of everything around them, generally they don't age even after centuries of being stoned (imagine the concept).

On the other hand, look at Mic Jagger. I'd say he has aged.

You say that as if he was ever "young".

Hey, he was 'young' at one point. Maybe not in your lifetime... or mine.... But I am sure at some point he was.... ???

Flesh to Stone affects all of the targets possessions, so you couldn't go mining for loot... although I wonder what would happen if you turned someone to stone while they were wielding a weapon and just broke their arm off, taking the stoned weapon with you. Could you cast Stone to Flesh at a later time and restore the limb/weapon? I guess that's DM's choice.

2nd edition states that any damage sustained by the stoned victim will translate to approximately equal injuries if the victim is ever un-stoned.

2nd edition also specifies that Stone to Flesh works on any stone, regardless of whether it was once flesh. "If cast upon stone, the wizard can create a cylinder of fleshy material from 1 to 3 feet in diameter and up to 10 feet long, allowing a passage to be made." Makes a pretty gruesome image for the wizard to fleshify a wall and then have a warrior character try to shovel the flesh out to escape from something...

So that's how necromancers make meat walls, huh?

If any of you have ever seen Jagger live recently, it's like watching a crazy dancing skeleton. So is that what petrification does eventually?

In BG2, petrifying an enemy and then casting Stone to Flesh on them reduces them to 1 HP so you can finish them off with a forceful sneeze.
