How often do you rest?

moody_magemoody_mage Member Posts: 2,054
Just wondering about peoples resting routines and if people have fixed requirements for as and when they can rest. Personally I tend to keep it pretty minimal - something I noticed especially on my current solo run where I've only just received the DUHM power in the lead up to the final battle...

I rest whenever ONE or more spell is missing, really, I don't see the cons of resting.

Very, very rarely. If there's a spell I can still cast, or my fighters can take a hit, or my assassin can sneak and backstab and run, I will not rest.

On my last run of BG2, I think I rested a grand total of two or three times, four at most, during the entire game.

Resting is one of the aspects of the game where I try to roleplay a little, so I usually try to rest at night and in a safe area (and conserve spells and abilities accordingly).

Depends on the mood of my character, really.
Once upon a time I played a Cleric of Lathander who always slept through the whole day and was only active at night. Basically, he had heliophobia. Now that was a fun playthrough indeed!

I used to spam rest when I was younger to get my spells back, but now I only use it if I'm in dire need of healing, or my party members are too tired. I also try to rest at night instead of in the day time.

Mildly off-topic: does it bug anyone else that Dorn always says "We should hold here. You look...tired," when he's the one getting fatigued? Especially when he's the first or only one to complain. XD

Like @mungomunk, I view resting from an RP perspective and usually do it once every 24-hour period. Inside longer dungeons like Durlag's Tower I will usually rest once per floor, when it's all cleared out and secured. If it seems unrealistic to be able to rest somewhere I avoid it even if the game allows for it.

@mungomunk, @Shin. So basically the last option?
  • SharShar Member Posts: 158
None of the above really. Though i rest a lot. I usually play insane, scs where a mere kobold commando that is not noticed in time is a fearful foe, able to wipe the floor with my mages. So i try to be always rested with spirit shield and stoneskin on.

I need an option for once every 24 hours as well.

I don't roleplay normal sleeping cycles, that seems really constrictive. I do avoid sleeping in dungeons as much as possible, however. If I must rest, I try to find a safe place... for example, in the Planar Sphere, if I'm weak and spell-depleted, I'll rest in the Dragonlancer room because those guys have apparently been there awhile and it seems secure. Other locations, like the Planar Prison, are impossible to justify sleeping in, so I don't do it.

It doesn't bug me, I think it's very in-character for him to be unwilling to acknowledge his own weakness.
He also has a different line in BG2. It made me sad. (He just says 'I am weary', btw)

For some reason Neera gets tired long before anyone else. I dunno if its a bug or if she's just a primadonna.

I used to rest a lot when I was new to the game, but years of fierce fighting with my ice warriors in the frigid, monster-infested wastes and dungeons of the North have taught me how to survive battles and preserve my party ressources well enough.

I´am trying not to abuse rest. Generally I rest before the dungeon and than I try to rest only before the final fight if it is necessary. And it is more funny to play without spells/abilities and to be forced to find out how to manage the next fight differently than normally. It forces me to use abilities of weapons and items, drink potions, change formation, use wands...

Has anyone else experienced that with Neera?

You are missing the most obvious option.

"When it is night time and my party goes to the local Inn for much needed rest after a hard day's adventuring."

She just has lower con than the rest of your party.

That said, my party is usually relatively high con, with only one NPC getting tired. I won't rest every 5 steps because Shar-Teel or Xzar is tired and there is no other reason to rest (major injuries and out of healing/potions, all spells exhausted). I'll rest in the next Inn, but I won't sleep in the middle of a quest.

Well, not quite, "as and when I need to" seems to imply someone who rests whenever he feels like it without restrictions.

Indeed this. Since his constitution while above average isn't all that high and since he's not used to traveling with companions, it seems likely that he's adopted this way of expressing fatigue.

When the whiners start complaining about fatigue, Neera or Aerie mostly, I head to the inn. When in Athkatla I go to Cromwell to forge an item which takes a day rest anyway, so the party rests without losing additional in-game time. No rest allowed during ongoing quests and certainly not to advance romance talks, unless I run out of spells or to fight a powerful enemy.

Sometimes its the option I checked, sometimes it's this option: "Once all my spells are gone or I have a particular need for healing."

I don't like my party to always be fresh as a daisy... so I only let them rest in a realistic place such as inns, campsites, etc. And if I just need to pass a few hours, or feel like RPing something, I'll use CTRL+T.
  • nanonano Member Posts: 1,632
I rest when Viconia is in the mood. So, a lot.

One game I had a bug where she would keep repeating one of her talks. Every so often, no matter when or where, she would jump me and we'd get it on right then and there.

Often times it's number two, though I rest more frequently later in the game and in ToB, where my party's portraits are covered in red and I used all my good spells killing mobs.

Right now my party consists of: Char (Fighter/Cleric), Keldorn, Saerileth, Rasaad, Mazzy and Neera. Since my mainchar just hit his HLA priest spells, we are not short of heals/buffs. And because I have that many heavy hitters, I can easily endure longer periods of walking.

Which suits me well: resting after every battle to replenish spells, triggers and other contingencies is what makes playing a mage tedious to me.

But I try to roleplay - I set up a camp when my team complains repeatedly about fatigue and when in Athkatla I always use inns at nights.

In that world--especially with everyone trying to kill you all the time--spells are crucial to survival. There's a risk to resting in some dangerous areas, sure. But the risk of proceeding without spells and special abilities is usually greater. And you would quickly realize it if you were actually there in that world trying to cope with all the dangers. But anyway, I rest according to the needs I have, tactically, for replenishment of spells and special abilities.

If I could design the game to my own taste: There would be two types of rest. One for physical fatigue, and one to prepare spells. The latter would take only an hour, or something on that order. However, the longer one goes without sleep, the higher the probability of failure to memorize some or all of the spells.
