When do companion dialogue trigger?

First time playing Baldur's Gate 1 and I'm wondering when you can have conversations with your party members. For example, Imoen. Right now, I barely started the game. I had just finished talking to some old wizard wearing red robes. I'm assuming there is no Normandy or camp-site where you can take breaks in between main missions and just talk to people, developing romances and whatnot.

You can't initiate conversation with party members in BG or BG2. Banters happen on a timer or in certain scripted locations. It should be noted that conversations between party members are few and far between in BG1; only the extended edition NPCs have more content. In BG2 they're much more common.

Sadly, there is not much in the way of character banter in the first game. The example you're using is just about the only time Imoen speaks up. The new NPCs all have banter in them and their own quests, but they're the only ones.

There is a mod being worked on called the BG NPC Project. It was compatible with the original game, and modders are currently trying to spruce it up for the Enhanced Edition. The mod gives a lot more banter to the characters, and some people have argued that they can't play BG1 without it.

You can follow the progress made on this mod (like I have) here: http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/9744/the-bg-npc-project/p1 Keep in mind though that these guys are working in their free time without pay, so it might be a while before it's accessible for everyone.

So long as I don't miss out on the romance options with Neera, when and if I find her..

Don't worry - once you have her in your party, the dialogues should trigger automatically after a certain period of time.
