BG2 Continuity

First of all, apologies if this has been discussed already.
My request is to have better continuity in BG2 based on your actions in BG1. For example, NPCs that you have killed should stay dead (unless they are essential to the BG2 story).
In the original BG games, NPC interactions in BG1 aren't properly acknowledged in BG2, instead, if you come across a character that you encountered in BG1 they will say something along the lines of "hey, don't I know you?" to which your reply is usually "yes, I killed you".
I think it would be cool if characters in BG2 remembered what you did to them in BG1, so characters like Garrick stay dead if they died for example. Obviously in some cases this couldn't work (for example Edwin needs to be alive for the story), but for the most part it does seem that some memory could be carried over.
I think the biggest problem with this is the characters that are with you at the beginning of BG2. If you don't finish BG1 with Jaheira and Minsc, then why would they be with you in the dungeon? Imoen makes sense to be there, but the others don't really make sense unless you actually had them in your end game save of BG1.
I understand that this would probably require a lot of work and so is probably not feasible, but would certainly make the game flow better from BG1 to BG2 in my opinion.
