Remove fear is a bread and butter moderate dutation level 1 cleric spell that I cast before 90% of combats. If you have problems with Khalid's morale it will completely negate them. He has one of the lower morale values but IIRC a number of other NPCs including Kagain have an identical break point.
Khalid is the least gear-dependent tank in BG1. He doesn't need either the gauntlets of dexterity or ogre power as he has decent Dex and can get longsword mastery to offset his middling strength. He also has decent constitution for good bonus HP.
Legend has it that Khalid has a slightly different morale failure value than other NPCs, and that hasn't been confirmed in a convincing way. A lot people play the "canon" party and I doubt that would be so popular if Khalid was really that bad and hard to manage.
Montaron gets along with everyone but Ajantis on his own, and it's Ajantis attacking all evil NPCs, not Monty attacking good NPCs. Jaheira and Xzar start the Harper/Zhent fight, true, but other than that, neither pair has conflicts with other NPCs.
Khalid and Garrick share the worst Morale Failure in the game. Though I rarely have NPCs run off scared unless actually under the "Fear" effect (it's happened maybe once or twice to me in different playthroughs)
