Can "Detect Illusion" replace True Sight?

abacusabacus Member Posts: 1,307
Pretty much what the title asks... I've never used this skill properly, but reading it again, an innate always-on true sight would seem really useful.
Or are there specific limitations?

You have to 'detect traps' to activate detect illusion.

As far as I know, it works the same as the spell True Sight, though it may need the thief to be in Detect Traps mode for it to work so no removing Illusions in the middle of attacking...

Ah, that makes sense. I thought it seemed a bit too powerful. It must be the hidden doors detection that's always on. (Don't have the game to hand atm.)
    Thanks @Avenger_teambg

Actually, if you are auto-attacking, you can activate the skill while attacking and it will stay active. This is basically an exploit, though. It works very well on Fighter/Thieves, though.

Otherwise, yeah you need to have DT active for it to work. Its still a very powerful ability. I laugh at invisibilities and mislead spells.

As stated, detect illusion is very powerful and can in many ways replace True Sight. It can sometimes take awhile to kick in though, whereas TS always gets its first activation as soon as you cast it. Then again, it has a certain casting time.

I think DI activates once per round or so, so depending on when you activate it it can take a while to kick in.

Is it like F.Traps as far as rating goes? (ie: 100 points = 100% success - extra points are wasted)

    Yep.

Detect Illusions can be repeated ad nauseam, cannot be dispelled, and I'm fairly sure bypasses Spell Immunity (and if it doesn't, that's a bug). Asides from the time it takes to apply (not severe) it's pretty much superior to True Sight in every respect.

Would be interesting to know whether or not a cleric/thief who casts find traps would gain their detect illusion rating. Just sayin.

    @Dragonspear
I think the Find Traps spell has quite a specific definition of "trap" in its description... So I would expect not.

    Yep.

Are you certain about either of these being 100% successful at 100 points??

I am pretty sure I recently missed the trap on the stairs in the slums slaver compound with a skill of 105 in spite of knowing a trap was there (and actively searching for it).

This has occurred at least twice recently altho I can't be certain of the FT score in the other occurrence.

Maybe your equipped gear/ other condition applied a negative modifier? Or it didn't have time to work? I believe it "searches" once every few seconds or similar, so maybe there's a 1% chance of failure on each sweep, but 100 has always worked for me... Providing I moved slowly enough.
That's only anecdotal though, so I could be wrong.

I haven't looked at the code so can't be completely certain, but the description of Detect Illusion does say that your skillpoints represent the percentage chance of dispelling enemy illusions. But perhaps there does remain a small chance to "critically fail" detection regardless of skillpoints as @abacus suggested.

I can also attest to always finding the stair trap in question with 100 Find traps, though I seem to recall there may be a modest few in ToB which are harder than 100 to find.

The only disadvantage to this (this is my first run trying it this way) is that hexxat is a lot squishier than any Mage...

    That's why you use Jan.

Traps have ANOTHER value to be removed, *sigh* so in the first game a trap set at 175 will be impossible to remove.
