Who's playing the Wasteland 2 Beta? What do you think?

marcerormarceror Member Posts: 577
I'm not playing it, because I didn't back the Kickstarter, but I will be getting the game as one of my rewards for backing Project Eternity (yeah, I still call it that).

I've glanced at a few of the Let's Plays (while they last on Youtube), and overall the game is looking extremely promising! I can't wait to play.

Are others around here playing? What do you think? And what are some good party builds?

I've been toying with creating a party that essentially looks like this:

Character 1 - Melee specialist (bladed weapons) and diplomat. - Basically a guy who specializes in bladed weapons and has plenty of STR, with a good number of social skills and higher CHA to complement that. He'll probably have revolvers or something similar as a backup weapon. I think of this character as 66% soldier, 33% skills based

Character 2 - Sniper - This character is all about death from a distance. Sniper rifles will be her speciality, and all her attributes and skills will be focused around enhancing this ability. This character will have plenty of coordination, along with some points in Luck, Awareness, etc. She will probably have a backup weapon like perhaps an assault rifle, for when the fights intensify, or sniper bullets are in short supply. I think of this character as essentially 100% soldier, who always tries to fight from a range. Though perhaps at higher levels she can invest a little as a medic, to be able to assist somewhat in this area.

Character 3 - Combat Medic and Thief - This character will have moderately high Intelligence as she will be rather skill dependent. She will start primarily as the medic, but will expand to fill thiefly roles, like moving silently, picking locks, etc. For weapons perhaps an assault rifle and a shotgun. This character will be like 40-50% percent soldier, and 50 - 60% skills based.

Character 4 - Tech expert and demolitions - This character will have very high Intelligence in order to better invest in a lot of skills, with technical skills being the key focus. He will be the computer hacker, toaster repairer, alarm disabler, password decoder type guy. He will also have some abilities in demolitions. For weapons, I'm thinking SMGs and perhaps blunt weapons in case he needs to conserve ammo. This character will basically be 20 - 25% soldier, 75 - 80% skills based.

In short I'm hoping to have all of the key skills and primary roles mostly covered by this group. I'm not sure if that's folly on my part to try for this. But the hope is that these 4 will be pretty much self sufficient, so any NPCs I add to the party will hopefully fill mostly combat roles. I'm surely open to any opinions from any budding Wasteland 2 experts out there.

Seems like an interesting mix Marceror1. I'm really still just getting used to the system myself, but would caution that you try not to spread your party too thin. Of course, since the beta is such a small part of the game, and systems are still being updated, it's really hard to say what will work well in the later part of the game.

That said, I can appreciate you trying to get all the major bases covered with your party of four PCs. I will likely do something similar with my group.

Thanks for the feedback Marceror2. I was worried that this post wasn't going to get any responses, so your reply is appreciated. For some reason I can't like your post, or I would have done so.

I've watched a bit more Let's Play action on it, and my enthusiasm for the game is only increasing.

Pardon me while I engage in a ménage au un, as apparently it's just Marceror and Marceror here.

Sorry, but I don't even know this game :P

It's basically Baldur's Gate in a post-apocalyptic setting. It's still in development, but just recently went into early beta.

It's being created by nXile, which is the developer that is also making Torment: Tides of Numenera. Led by former Interplay big wig Brian Fargo with lots of folks who used to be with that company.

Obsidian (Project Eternity/Pillars of Eternity and Mask of the Betrayer, among others) and nXile are really two sides of a very similar coin, and the teams have a lot of history with one another.

A bit more history... Interplay brought us many of the games we love on these forums, including our beloved Baldur's Gate. Most of the great CRGPs came from a child company, Black Isle Studios, which was headed by Feargus Urquhart, current CEO of Obsidian.

The point is, for those of us who love IE games, nXile and Obsidian are two great developers to get behind, at least for the old school RPGs both are working on these days.

I'm really excited about it too. I'm not in the beta though, nor would I want to be really. Why play the game when it's half finished? That would just spoil it in my opinion.

I generally agree @OlleDenStore. I say "generally" because, sure, I'm tempted to want to get my hands on it, but would much rather play the finished product. The fact that I've already got a copy queued up for me due to my backing level on Project Eternity (okay, okay, Pillars of Eternity) is enough to prevent me from coughing up any more dough to get early beta access.

I am working through it, as well, having backed WL2 when it first set up its Kickstarter. Strangely, the computer I have at the house and the one I have at work are very similar but at home it crashes on transition to the world map but at work everything is just fine. A few minor things I have reported already but so far the game is really enjoyable and relatively stable (well, at least at work).

Well the game just got a major update that is supposed to fix many technical problems. I been following the news and streams of WL2 beta and the game looks good and it will only get better as it nears full release. I backed it on KS but not to the level to get beta access.

I've been playing it. I really like it thus far. I played the original Wasteland when I was a kid and loved it, finished it too. Playing this new one brought back many fond memories of when I played the original. Yes, the game does need some work but it is a beta. I love the style of the game and I'm anticipating the full release.

Anyone know a projected release date for Wasteland 2? I've finally gotten out of my comfort zone and am trying a bunch of new games, and this sounds perfect.

These days games are good since no need to read "paragraphs" whenever the game requires.
Hope they supports xbox controller and even more, vibration.
