Thief skills and the 1% failure.

As per the title, all thief skills theoretically have a 1% failure chance.

With this in mind.... What's the point of increasing your 1-100 skills, such as Set Trap and Detect Illusion, to 100 instead of 99?

Some difficult things give a penalty, so you up your chances by exceeding 100%. Set trap, however, doesn't appear to have such a limitation; I do not know about illusion detection, as I've always seen this as a useless skill that I ignore (far more important to find traps and open locks IMO).

Can you actually critically fail? I've never seen it but at 1% I bet it's easy to miss.

Given that Detect Illusions is pretty well impossible to tell, and you probably set far fewer than 100 Traps in a game.... Hard to say. I know I've failed Pickpocketing from a shop at 245 Pickpocket skill though. Any code divers that might know?

You know nothing of Detect Illusions, Jon Snow.

Detect illusions is far from useless.

Because it just looks bad if every skill is not a multiple of five.

This is what kills me the most about having a Thief with 20 DEX. There's that one extra skill point that just won't go away. First Realm problems.
And I thought I was the only one...every time I level up Hexxat it makes my eyes twitch.

Show mercy for those without knowledge: Detect illusions kills illusion spells and detects invisible, so you should use it ;)

Oh, the feeling of being a noob and doing things right, with my Swashbucklear->Mage, I gave her 100 open locks, find/remove traps, set traps and detect illusions, because Hide in shadows sucks if you are a Swashie and you will never use pick pockets, and having no place to spend the points in, I've spent them all in detect illusions, my god, oh, in the final battle I was detecting for traps (so noobish!), and eventually, Semaj's mirror image disappeared, I wondered why, because he had casted it in the last round, I came here and read a little, and I realized that it was very useful after all. Now she saves a slot of True Sight for others spells, bad luck I gave her 13 CON and 13 WIS, instead of dumping one and putting more points in the other :P
