Can't talk to Cespenar

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
I have talked to Cespenar several times and used his services. But now the dialogue window simply won't open up. My party members can get a (futile) dialoge window to pop up with him, but when the protagonist talks to him he just says "oo, shiny" and "Cespenar's a good servant" and stuff like that.

I have no mods installed.

    The only thing out of the ordinary I can think of is that this coincides with problems with black screen that I have seen others suffer from. ToB sometimes starts up completely black, and sometimes it's pitch black when I gate to the Pocket Plane. But it usually corrects itself when I click to move or open a menu. Maybe this has done something to Cespenar's brain. I would SO, so much like him to take a look at some stuff I've gathered.

    Same thing just hit me mid-way through ToB. He just stpooed talking. Any solution?
