Stalkers are...awesome!

cbarchukcbarchuk Member Posts: 322
I've not ever played this class till now and currently my character is level 21. He is an absolute beast! I have to give thanks to 'thespace' for recommending this kit. If you want a stealthy light fighter then I think Stalkers are arguably the best. Single class, tons of proficiency points, awesome THACO, stealth, great APR, backstab, and some very cool spells to boot. The kit is definitely more of a specialist but man I'm amazed how good they are. At first I thought the x4 backstab would feel weaker compared to x5 but I didn't notice any difference especially when paired with critical strike. So for anyone who hasn't played one, I recommended it big time. They seem to be often overlooked. I know that was the case with me. At any rate, thanks for allowing me to go off on a tangent...lol. Oh and Merry Christmas to one and all!

I agree. They have been my favorite next to the swashfighter for a while now. And, the only reason I prefer a swashfighter is to be able to pick locks/detect traps. Otherwise, I think a stalker is more fun and prefer to just import a thief to do the lockpicking and trap disarming for me lol.

Stalker is decent, nothing great about them. I like Vaylgar (the Joinable NPC stalker in the game) and with a bit of fair cheat (when i made Main Chars in BG2 i always create with CLUAConsole the same amount of skill books found in BG), i'm giving him the 3 wisdom books to make him a Stalker/Cleric Dual Class :)!

Stalkers are definitely a more specialized version of the fighter/thief. But I love the sheer amount of proficiency points. This allows for lots of weapon combos you can use and right now my character's dual wielding THACO is -10/-8. I think that's fantastic. I love that I can haste myself and minor spell deflection is just sweet. I dunno maybe I'm overly geeking out here. I originally didn't think much about them. I typically enjoy multi class fighter/thieves and I still do. But there is now something about Stalkers that I just dig. They feel very assassin-like to me.

YEAH!!! You got me psyched to go play my stalker right now! I still find them to be the most fun as my Charname, so far.
I got you to thank man. You challenged me on their effectiveness compared to a fighter/thief. And I have to admit that you were right so I appreciate being wrong. Discovering a new class that you really enjoy is pure awesome sauce.

I've mainly have usuno's blade, mace of disruption, and spectral brand in my main hand slots along with belm in my off hand. I also have two points in bastard swords and used foebane to slaughter everything on the 3rd level of Watcher's keep. Racial enemy is demon's as well. So he's really effective against literally anything. With a base APR of 5 and improved haste raising it to 10, he's unstoppable. Throw in some critical and power strikes and he's just flippin' ridiculous in melee. The ring of duplication, barkskin, and minor spell deflection gives him some defense too. Geez I can't really think of any weaknesses. I mean he has absolutely dominated in my current game so far.

For Helm's sake man... why would you dual class a stalker into a cleric??? That makes absolutely no sense. The class is really great on its own, which is what makes it such a great choice. It honestly needs no further attention. But! If you were, for some reason, to give it additional attention - why a cleric?

Ranger->Cleric is solid because of the Druid spells you get, plus Clerics with backstab can do a lot of damage with buffs like Righteous Magic.

Some ppl are too new in the game to know how the mechanics works @Mitchfork, he will learn with time.

@cLogik, Dual Class is probally the most powerful resource of Baldur's Gate 2, so mostly of the proper dualed classes are stronger than the single sequence of a single class.

For Cleric/Ranger combo, that's even more special cos when a Ranger dual Class to Cleric, he gains druid spells (from the ranger class) in all the divine circle levels, not only on 1° to 4° circle (as rangers normally get), so you got BOTH cleric and druid spells in ALL the divine magic level.

From another point, i can buff the character up to 25 dexterity throught this, send his Thac0 to the lowerst numbers with buffs and i can now use heavy armor with the dualed class.

A Stalker in specific, get the best dual class in my opinion at level 13, as pratically most of the game classes (specially Kensai/Mage). Rangers get the last extra attack per round at level 13 (as fighters), they get the extra mage spells in their list and another proficience point to spend at level 12 also. Clerics evolve fast in level terms, which meant i wouldn't have to wait too long to reach level 14 in the cleric progression (to reactivate the inactive ranger class).

Obs: Rangers can ONLY dual class to cleric by the way, that's why Ranger/Cleric.

I've often toyed with the idea of playing as a stalker - mainly because it would give me an excuse to use this portrait here,
    image

...and also because I think the title "stalker" is simply one of the coolest in the game.

But I've never really gotten into backstabbing, and I know that's considered one of the main appeals to playing as a stalker.

Is it worth playing as a stalker even if I'm not so crazy about backstabbing? Or should I force myself to get the hang of backstabbing so I can play as a stalker?

Shouldn't be too hard to mod?
Or you could give the char uai and keeper proficiencies.

Can Stalkers backstab with all weapons, or are they also limited to Thief Proficiency weapons?

I always found that although he was one of the most background NPCs in the game, Valygar has always netted more kills in my party than Korgan, Minsc, Edwin or Keldorn ever did. Boots of Speed + Dual Wield + Backstab is overwhelming to most enemies. There is a certain suicidal aspect to the class though I think: AC is not stellar, and might as well be 10 when you get to Throne of Bhaal. Nalia actually managed to have higher AC than Valygar by the midway point in ToB, which I found both amusing and surprising.

I made an archer cleric with ee keeper UAI longbow but got bored pretty quick. Had a much more fun time with plain stalker

    Valygar, yo!

If you get past his extremely wooden personality (there is a mod that.... somewhat.... helps) he can be pretty fun to use. I have him in one of my games, and he and Yoshimo do these awesome double backstab combos that make the game so much fun. Goodbye MaeVar.

As interesting as it sounds to see what a stalker->cleric looks like, it is highly unlikely that I ever will b/c I find the process of duel classing to be a drag, and the stalker is already a strong/fun character. Dueling at 13 sounds like a huge amount of down time to be babysat by other characters. My secondary game I have going on is a ranger/cleric, however, so I'll at least get an idea of what it would be like.

That's a question for tastes, i don't complain about the trouble, after all it's the point of the game to know new forms of play it at every replay.

    scimitar

Does "scimitar" also include the ninja-to and wazi-whatever weapons?
  • jackjackjackjack Member Posts: 3,251
I would hope so, either of those make more sense than backstabbing someone with a scimitar.

However, items in those categories that cannot be naturally used by thieves (e.g. Staff of the Magi, Scarlet Ninja-to) cannot backstab.
  • SharGuidesMyHandSharGuidesMyHand Member Posts: 2,580
If someone really isn't into backstabbing as part of their playing style, is there still a reason to play as a stalker rather than, say, a vanilla ranger?
