Companion Quests: Will they leave?

I'm sure someone else has had this problem. You are walking around the map, minding your own business, when suddenly a child starts crying or an uncle needs help or a keep is invaded and suddenly, all your companions are barking at you to do there side quest, causing you to rush through the game to keep them all happy with nary a minuet to spare, and you do them because you worry they will leave forever if you don't manage it like Minsc's starting quest in BG1.

My question is this, if I do not manage there side quests in time, will they leave? And will they return? Also, how far do I have to be into the quest before they will stop asking for help? Any advice will be appreciated.

Why wouldn't you do the companion quests? They are usually short with decent rewards. I'm pretty sure most will leave (if they have a quest) and you ignore them for a while.

I do want to do them, but I don't like to be rushed. It also dosesnt help that I get them all at the same time, like when I stepped into the docks and got Yoshimo's, Areis's and Minsc's quest all at the same time.

@Soltra: Jan Jansen's quest is time-dependent. The others, generally, are not. Minsc doesn't even have a quest, so you're mistaken there.

If they really start to moan, you should probably heed them, but it's unlikely they will.

I think Aerie will stop whining (about this particular subject, anyway) once you simply go ask Raelis what she wants, and similarly Yoshimo might shut up once you've merely accepted Renal's quest.

I have a fresh memory of Nalia leaving because I didn't head to the keep in a timely manner, so yeah it's not entirely safe to be a jerk.

I say Minsc has a quest because after you are asked by the small boy to help his villiage and see how they are being turned inside out, Minsc kept asking to go to the village in the same way as other companion quests.

That's not a companion quest though because it's not specific to Minsc. The same boy comes up to you and offers it even if you've never had Minsc in the party. The actual companion quests are all about and require their respective characters; Umar Hills never even mentions Minsc one way or the other. He was going to have a quest but it was cut in development - the Unfinished Business mod restores it.

Jan will also leave after a few days if you haven't done his, I know.

Oh none of them walk out for class quests. Aeries is actually the bard quest and minsc the ranger quest so no problems with either.

Many of them WILL leave if you ignore their sidequests, but out of the 3 you mentioned, none of those are actual NPC sidequests, they are suggestions the NPCs give to lead you certain places and move the game along.

Yoshimo's is just to direct you to the shadow thieves. Minsc's is just to direct you to the Umar hills. Aerie's is just to direct you to the planar prison. None of those quests actually involve those NPCs, they just guide you.

On the other hand, several NPCs like Nalia, Mazzy, Jan, etc. WILL leave if you ignore their quests for too long.

Yoshimo sticks with you even if you don't see Renal. Eventually he's just like "Ah, whatever. He'll be there when you get around to it". Of course, the Renal Bloodscalp quest isn't specific to him, so that might have something to do with it. In my experience, you usually have a week or two to start the quest, depending on the NPC.

Honestly, Most of those are just to let you see every potential quest. If an NPC doens't bug you once or twice about it, your safe. They will leave if you don't do their personal quests which involve them at a personal level.
