@Tanthalas, I think @Boaster meant that ankhegs red circles are 'buried' below dirt when they come out from the ground. Maybe he wants circles to be larger like wyverns and basilisks so they can be seen.
I never so much as "see" a circle for ankhegs, whether in the ground or above ground.
The dirt that is part of their sprites covers it, but it is there, otherwise you wouldn't be able to attack them. You simply don't see the red circle most of the time because it's the same size of your PC's. If you're careful enough to pause when they're coming out, you'd see a red circle.
@Boaster The moment the first gob of acidic spit hits their faces, they will be rid of any such misconceptions. Though I agree that some monsters could use a scaled up circle, most noticeably dragons and, of course, Demogorgon. The thing is huge, and yet his active circle is not bigger than average Wyvern's. (As a result my CHAR apparently can't see an elephant... I mean, a huge tentacled monster, in the small room. Maybe he's in denial?

They do get a red circle once they're out of the ground.
