Switching Characters in the Inventory Screen?

I saw someone doing it during a youtube tutorial. I searched and searched but could not find out how to do it. Basically, he was selecting an item with his mouse on one character screen, switching to another character, and dropping the item into their INV (instead of dragging and dropping to their portrait like i'm doing.)

Not a huge deal, just a little shortcut i wanted to take advantage of.

    Number keys are hot keys for characters with leader at number 1 - next character Number 2 etc..
