I actually like the story behind The Cult of the Unseeing Eye. I've a soft spot for old gods.
I had to look up a guide to get past the demon you have to heal
Ah, now you've reminded me of a silly story of many years ago...
I was what... Maybe seven or eight years old? My mother was playing Baldur's Gate 2 (my mom is AWESOME), and I was intrigued when I came to check on her. She'd just gotten to the part when she had to battle said demon.
I read over her shoulder the demon's despairing cries that it feeds on hatred and malice and pain... And I immediately burst out "MOM! YOU HAVE TO HEAL IT!" I kept saying that over and over again, until I watched her die and have to reload. Many hours later, when she'd finally beaten the darn thing, she came back with a smile and said, "By the way, you were right; I really did need to heal it."
I got a huge ego-boost that day. I suppose that's another reason why I'm so attached to this quest.
I always liked that particular quest because, in a world where the Gods do actually walk among the people, a 'false' God arises. I mean the sheer unmitigated gall of it all, hoping that one or more of the Gods won't simply smite said 'pretender' just out of spite. Plus the commentary it makes on religion in general, "Unseeing Eye" such that you have to pluck out your own eyes to join... And people DO IT!. Priceless.
I picked the planar sphere for the sense of cohesion it gives to the D&D worlds. When I saw the Solamnic Knights in there I was agog over them because I grew up reading Dragonlance too. I was just happy to see the two worlds connect, even if in a non-canon way.
When my evil elf Sorcerer, recently transformed into a drow, feels like "Ahhh... I'm home."
Plus, with SCS installed, the city puts up one of the few good fights of the game.
How do you do this fight with a party that hasn't gone through watcher's keep (IE one that is not hugely outleveling the content)? I had a few HLAs for it but it just wasn't enough. I mean I probably coulda won if I got super lucky, but I don't think I could win without coming back in Chapter 6 to try it (but it locked on me every time i tried to get out so I didn't do that...
The main problem was that eventually my charname would always get instant death killed...
Granted I was playing on core rules, but I recently did it with my wizard slayer's party without having done WK or gotten any of the good early loot (like Carsomyr). It really wasn't that bad, just had to have SoBalduran. Granted I had Rasaad who was already like 16 and he pretty much carried my group through that place.
Which is good since I got imoen back at level 11 when my party was long past that. I made a rule after that to get just enough gold to bail her out and save the rest of the quests for Chapter 6 from now on if I'm going to use her.

I'm not sure how SoBalduran helps you against the drow army encounter we're talking about... With SCS if you make Ust Natha turn hostile on you, the Drow Army comes one squad at a time every 3-4 rounds.
The drow defenders of Ust Natha look like this: Group A: disorganised raiders (about every five rounds) Three L9 fighters, two L9 archers, a L12/12 fighter/mage Two L9 fighters, two L9 archers Four L9 fighters, two L9 archers, a L10 cleric Four L9 fighters, a L11 mage Group B: serious war-parties (every four rounds) Each party comprises six L9 fighters, four L9 archers, a L10 cleric, a L14 cleric, a L12/12 fighter/cleric, a L11 mage, and a L15 mage. There are four of these war-parties. Group C: elite battlegroups (every ten rounds, with another Group B war-party between each battlegroup) Four L9 fighters, three L17 mages Four L9 fighters, two L12/12 fighter/clerics, a L18 cleric, a L18 mage, a glabrezu, and two nabassu Two L11 mages, a L15 mage, a L22 mage, and four stone golems Six L9 fighters, two L10 clerics, two L12/12 fighter/clerics, a L14 cleric, a L20 cleric, two balors and two glabrezu.
Note that because they're all Drow, magic doesn't work so good...
I'm not sure how Rasaad helps at all for that? My problem was that once the high level clerics and mages started coming and spamming death spells, I eventually fail a save. I'm not sure how it was happening probably doom and malison since all of my saves are negative, but basically by that point all of my protection spells were gone.
Also the only two spells that would blow away a good chunk of the low levels was Dragon's Breath or Firestorm, and those are very limited without having access to Wish, which is why I'm thinking Watcher's Keep before going there might be the only way to win.
Ah my bad I didn't realize it was a full on city assault. I thought you were talking about just doing the Ust Natha quests. So the shield was good for the Beholder Lair. My bad. I think next time I play a LG character I might try to just carve up the city.

Sorry for Off-Topic but I really wish they would change the Imoen issue. I think some time in Spellhold and some experimentation by Irenicus with her Bhaalspawn abilities is worth quite a bit of XP. He "unlocked her powers". The easiest would be to add a lot of special Quest XP to Imoen specifically when she gets her soul back, to the point where she's at equal footing with the party average. I always just cheat her experience because I think the story calls for it.
My semi cheat for this is to carry every scroll case full of scrolls to spell hold, temporarily boot everyone who stands still and have her write them all...
Also the level 13 one is behind in exp but I find her pretty useful for SOA since she still gets level 8 spells by the time you finish the under dark usually even earlier. Extra improved haste and pfmw is never bad.

I'll be here all week.
