Why is the laughing man logo on so many online forum/internet profiles...With the quote: I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.
Can anyone explain why this 1950's quote/image is so popular online?
It's a reference to a character in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, an anime series from the early 2000's (the manga started in the late 80's and there was an anime film in 1995). It's been co-opted by various "hacker" groups (although the term should be taken pretty loosely), kinda like the Guy Fawkes mask.
The character name (The Laughing Man) and the quote are both references to stories by J.D. Salinger.
