It depends on how much role-playing you really mean.
Role playing in the sense of: Your specialized school is really only important due to which school you give up? Conjurer. (Maybe wild mage, haven't tried it yet, nor neera.) Your specialized school would actually benefit your school of magic? Enchantment.
I can't tell you how amazing it was when I was a level 2 mage who accidently wondered into the ankheg nest, to get surrounded by 3 of the blasted things, to fire off a sleep spell and get all three in one go, to watch in disbelief as khalid and minsc each solo'd one while imoen and jaheira pulled a sandwich that would have made one bug very happy... had he, you know, not died. Meanwhile dynaheir was off dead in a corner somewhere because she can't perform enchantment.
I enjoyed my wild-mage playtrough the most. Also, it'S a very fun class to play (both in game mechanics, as Rp-wise, as far as i'm concearned) The wild surges ar just soooo much fun, and the fact you have no spell school you can't pick up makes it a very versatily char imho.) But, i never played any other specialised mages, so dunno about them.
