Party mix question BG1

Hi there, so I'm looking for a good party mix to take me through 1&2
Currently with
PC Fighter/Illusionist
Minsc
Imoen
Khalid
Jahira
Rasaad
Bit concerned I might need another Mage
Would you agree?
If so who would you suggest... And who goes?
Any help appreciated..

I think it it OK with mages, you won't have problems with that (nice) party setup.

Minsc can go. You don't want Dynaheir from the looks of it; Jaheira and Khalid can frontline, makes room for Xan or Neera?

That would be a last resort, not sure I could cope with the lack of liberal butt kicking .. Eh Boo..

If you plan to dual Imoen to mage, you're good on mages. Otherwise it depends on what you plan on doing with your main.

Erm... u do know that when u transfer from BG 1 to BG 2, u only transfer ur Charname, and u will need to recruit NPC companions again? (though quite a lot of them do make a reappearance, there's also a lot of entirely new BG 2 characters.) Who u played with in BG 1 has no bearing on the starting location and condition of BG 2 NPC companions.

So... for ur BG 1 party, it seems fine as is. Magic is not particularly powerful at such low levels, but it would be easier if u had more arcane casters for BG 2, where the magic battle is critical to success.

If u wanna make ur life a bit easier in the early-game, u can replace Rassad with Kivan in BG 1. Monks are pretty weak in BG at low levels, whereas Archers (Kivan) are a powerhouse.

Seriously? Minsc is a better frontline character than the two of them put together. Either get Khalid killed or dump both of them and pick up Branwen for a healer. Dynahier is a good option for another caster as well.

I don't play good parties, I just go with what people tell me about those NPCs. Minsc needs the dex gauntlets to be a decent tank, so does Jaheira, but Khalid doesn't (so he can wear Hands of Takkok for strength instead). Makes them a good enough tank/damage dealer pair. From the other pair, OP doesn't plan in the second half anyway, so why bother?

I'm rolling through a good party now.

    I've got:
Charname as an archer (so Kivan is out)
Minsc & Jaheira as my front liners (Khalid didn't make it out of Nashkel...)
    Imoen as my thief
    Neera as my caster
And Kagain for the short term until I pick up Brenwen for a healer

While Minsc has a good Str score in BG1, his Dex and Con are only 15, leaving a lot to be desired @Belanos. He really needs the Gauntlets of Dexterity to be a viable tank, as does Jaheira. If you give both of them the Gauntlets then Jaheira's got better HP compared to Minsc's better THAC0, making it a bit of a toss-up between them. Of course, she can heal as well...

Khalid is actually one of the best tanks in BG1 and doesn't require unique items to tank. His natural Dex of 16 and Con of 17 mean he's always got decent AC and HP. Being a pure-class fighter he can get to mastery in Longswords at level 3, which offsets his average strength and gives him the same THAC0 as Minsc. There's only one set of Gauntlets of Dexterity in BG1 - there needs to be someone with decent natural Dex to act as another frontliner.

He's such a coward though. The slightest scratch and he's off shouting, "The better part of valour, the better part of valour!" Though I have noticed in the EE game that he doesn't seem to do that as often. Perhaps they tweaked his morale break. Minsc however will never stop, no matter what kind of a beating he's taking. And he's a lot more entertaining. He's such a character that I wouldn't even consider playing either of these games without him.

But then your argument shifts from mechanics to preference. And it's fine if you prefer Minsc, but he's not a better front line fighter than Khaleira.

Rasaad can definitely go. Monks are not that great at low level, and you've already got four fighter types if you count Jaheira. I would definitely pick up another mage as well as dualling Imoen to mage if you haven't, and start making liberal use of disabling spells (mainly color spray and horror at low level, web and/or stinking cloud after the Cloakwood.)

Also, you can't take your party with you to BG2, so there's no loss in dropping Rasaad now and picking him up there, if you want him around at high level.

Though if you are going to play with Rasaad in BG2, I recommend you switch him in for a tiny bit in BG1 to do his quest (it starts in Baldur's Gate, so it's in the last third of the game). His quest in BG2 is a direct continuation from his quest in BG1, and better to know what's going on by having played through BG2.
