Newish member with questions.

Heya.

Firstly am a newish member, well I been joined awhile and am kind interested to see the sate of the game's at the moment, I have the old games with just the expos and am replaying them again, along with planescape torment, now I looked on youtube at some vids and such and am liking what i see.

But really as I have the old games up and running ( kind off ) is it worth looking at BG 1 & 2 EE ???

And please tell me you can play subraces ?

I'd say it's definitely worth getting the EEs. Playing the first one with the mechanics of the sequel is sooo much more fun I think, the new class kits are great and the additional companions add some nice variety. With all the additional UI upgrades and the convenience of both games working without having to resort to voodoo in newer OSes I know I'm not going back to the original, great though they were.

Sadly we can't play sub-races... yet... They haven't ruled out the possibility of sub-races being added down the line. The statement was something like "we're looking at the idea and we know how we want to implement them if/when we do".

I had the 5 disk version of BG1 and then one disk of ToTSC, and found the constant switching disks to be very annoying (and more often than not, the computer said it's the wrong disk although it isn't). So I bought the EE versions just for that reason - the new characters, and the changes to BG1 with respect to kits and such were just icing on the cake. The change in resolution is definitely another bonus. :)

The new Enhanced Editions are a lot easier on the eyes than the original games. There are a number of nice little changes, like playing kits in BG1. The EEs also have a more polished feel than modding the originals yourself. It's one install with no hassle, much easier than tutu or BGT.

Not playing subraces isn't too much of a hardship really. There are a few new kits to choose from though.

You do realize that you have the option to install the whole thing on to your hard drive so you don't need to switch discs? You'd only need to use a disk for the security check to launch the game. Which you don't need to do at all with the EE version.

Besides the points above, you also have 3 - 4 new NPCs who all add new content/quests. BG1 has 3 new NPCs + 1 easter egg, all using a class or kit that wasn't available previously (Blackguard, Wild Mage, Sun Soul Monk, easter egg is a sorcerer) and BG2 adds another (unkitted thief, but with a race twist). All except the easter egg have new quests and loot, some interactions with the old NPCs and new areas.

What has also not been mentioned - with Black Pits, you get an additional combat-oriented adventure, which is nicely done.

First one is probably the one of the two that benefitted the most from the "enhancing" tbh. But yeah, good decision to get one at a time. Doubt you'll be disappointed, enjoy!

You forgot to mention that you're not restricted to just 800 x 600 or 1024 x 786 screen resolutions. Of course there's always the Widescreen mod, but being able to zoom in an out with EE is much better.
