Companion questions

I’m just in the beginning of the game (Nashkal Mines) and my party consists of; Me (Archer), Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc and Dynaheir.
I wanna try some other companions so I’m planning on leaving Jaheira and Khalid in Nashkal. But, if I change my mind and want them back again, will they join me?
And if, will they have the same experience levels as they had when I left them, or will they have levelled up?
Is Jaheira and Khalid the right ones to replace, or should it be Minsc and Dynaheir instead? I need a good fighter and he/she has to be good or neutral as I’m chaotic good.
And another question; If we kill a monster and it gives us 600 experience points, will it be distributed 100 points for each one of us (we are six), but if we were four members it would had been 150 points each?
Thanks!

Assuming you finish their quest first (Nashkel mines; though technically I think maybe you just have to talk to the mayor about it) they'll stick around forever. They will stay where you leave them so pick somewhere good. I suggest an inn.

They'll have the exp. and gear you left them with.

Personal preference I'd say. Though having a healer of some sort is a good idea and Jaheira beats Dynaheir then imo. The alignment of your party members doesn't mean that much as long as your reputation doesn't get too high for evil party members (above 18) or too low for good ones (3 or below I think). If you can replace either pair entirely you could get a cleric, Branwen, from the carnival and Ajantis, a paladin, from the area just south of Baldur's Gate's bridge.

All experience points is divided equally among anyone in the party at the time whether it's from a quest or kill.

Other good-aligned party members you might consider include Kivan (Elf Ranger) and Yeslick (Dwarf Fighter/Cleric). Kivan is a decent archer or tank and can be found at High Hedge (west of Beregost). Yeslick is a great tank and healer if you give him some armour and the Gauntlets of Dexterity. He can be found in a hidden mine you'll run across as part of the plot.

Always good to have a new player on board. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy the game.

One thing to keep in mind - your reputation and how happy or angry about it your companions are (based on their alignment) may also effect whether or not a companion will stay where you leave them or leave forever. There is a chart for this in the manual but generally speaking it only comes into play at the extremes - if you are very popular or very despised and if you have a mixed alignment party. (If you have all neutral/good members and are popular everyone is happy)

Also companions have specific quests with timers and will leave you if you don't do them on time. Check the forum for details.

Welcome to the game and community. :)

Quest xp is indeed shared between the party. There are some quests in BG 2 where everybody gets an equal xp reward, regardless of how many in the party, but I don't remember any cases like that in BG 1.

A few more points to make:

    1) Encase u didn't know, there is a canon party for BG 1, and u currently have it. (Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc and Dynaheir). If u stick with them, the beginning of BG 2 would make a bit more sense.

    2) Although I enjoy trying different NPCs, and did it a lot in BG 2, u should be aware that this means ur party might be progress a bit slower than 'normal', with xp more spread out. That said, BG 1 has plenty of content to hit the xp cap, if u play fairly completionist.

    3) Make sure u train up Imoen's Find Traps to 100. U're gonna need it.

Frankly, there is no real advantage to have the "canon party". If you move on to BG2, not all of your BG1 companions will be available anyway. It's not a mechanical thing; it's pure roleplay and hence your imagination. Mechanically, a party with a cleric is more balanced than one with only a "half" druid (Jaheira is multiclass and levels slower, that's why I say half).

Yeslick would be a good match for your party, however, you need to reach a certain point in the story to get him. Before that, Branwen (neutral aligned cleric, Nashkel Carnival), Ajantis (good aligned paladin, North of FAI) and Kivan (good aligned ranger, High Hedge) are all good options. If you decide to ditch Minsc and Dynaheir, you probably want a new mage rather than a cleric/tank. Xan (neutral Enchanter, end of Nashkel Mines) and Neera (neutral Wild Mage, Beregost) are your options.
