I have never made or used a character specializing in spears. I always regret it when I get that Ixil's thingamajabber in TOB and it looks cool, but by then everyone is already swinging around glowing weapons of doom and it's too late to worry about changing.

I'd agree totally with Equalizer and also throw in the Wave Halberd. Sure it's nice, but you have to go to the Shaugin city, you have to follow the "evil" path to get it and when you get it out, the person you've probably got using two handed weapons is going to be using a sword!

I've given it to Dorn this game just so I get some use out of it.

I wouldn't say that any path is good or evil in that city given that all sides are disgusting murderous bastards. I kill them all every time (as in, go with the Rebels then betray them). Or you can just pickpocket to get the Wave part if you'd rather not kill someone unnecessarily.

I also love the Wave, and lament the fact that I usually can't justify someone maining it. I also tend to only have one two handed weapon user, and that's Keldorn with Carsomyr. It's good on Minsc, but Minsc is just outclassed as a character (by Keldorn in Melee, by Mazzy ranged), so when I'm playing an Archer, he'll usually get it as melee.

Hard to go past the Lilarcor, best weapon in the game, also pretty useful in a fight.

I'd say dagger of the star. Get a Mage/thief use poly self spider form and improved haste. Nothing quite like 10 attacks which can pop invis for a free backstab. But even then assassination with 10 attacks is a bit more OP.

I've got an odd fondness for Impaler.

+3 Spear with an extra +10 damage, so its basic damage is 14-19. You can get it in the Sahuagin City. Spears are fairly meh on the whole and its not really great enough to devote a whole character too, but damn, it hits hard.

I used the Impaler on an Avenger->Fighter, and LOVED it. Ixil's Nail can be found in Watcher's Keep (in case there's something you want to fight that needs a +4 to hit), and can be upgraded into Ixil's Spike, which is blamazing.

There are decent spears very early in BG2 as well, so overall, yay. I think it gets ignored because it's a two-handed weapon that only has a 1d6 base damage, but there are some great spears, and spears have a great coolness factor.

It's just a shame that there really aren't any spears in BG1. Ironically, the best spear in that game is a quarterstaff (Staff Spear+2).

Spears really should do at least d8 damage. Doesn't make any sense that a spear is exactly as effective as a hunk of unfinished wood (club) and takes two hands to wield. I think it would be cool to bump them up to d8+1 just to give them an additional distinction from halberds and two-handed swords.

Warhammers should also be bumped up to d6+1 (from d4+1) for the same reason. Truth be told the base weapon damage balancing leaves a lot to be desired.

I think making spears one handed would sort the problem. I can't see how it'd be overpowered in any way.

a warhammer doing the same damage as a dagger is silly

A dagger doing 1D4 is also silly.
