Location on Map Flashes Red

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
Sometimes, when I go to the travel map, a location (such as docks, slums, or tradesmeet) is flashing red... What does that mean? Nothing exciting seems to be happening there when I go, and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with quests.
